On the day that I was born
Daddy sat down and cried
I had the mark just as plain as day
which could not be denied
They say that Cain caught Abel
rolling loaded dice,
ace of spades behind his ear
and him not thinking twice

Half-step
Mississippi Uptown Toodleloo
Hello baby, I'm gone, goodbye
Half a cup of rock and rye
Farewell to you old southern sky
I'm on my way - on my way

If all you got to live for
is what you left behind
get yourself a powder charge
and seal that silver mine
I lost my boots in transit babe
pile of smoking leather
Nailed a retread to my feet
and prayed for better weather

Half-step

Mississippi Uptown Toodleloo
Hello baby, I'm gone, goodbye
Half a cup of rock and rye
Farewell to you old southern sky
I'm on my way - on my way

They say that when your ship comes in
the first man takes the sails
The second takes the afterdeck
The third the planks and rails
What's the point in callin shots?
This cue ain't straight in line
Cueball's made of styrofoam
and no one's got the time

Half-step
Mississippi Uptown Toodleloo
Hello baby, I'm gone, goodbye
Half a cup of rock and rye
Farewell to you old southern sky
I'm on my way - on my way

No, you just need to have smoked about 10 pounds of weed, popped pills of every variety, chasing this all with a gallon of ripple wine, and then the music of the Grateful Dead will make perfect sense to you.

Favorite album from the boys...and it was all done in house on their own label.  Jerry was a workaholic in the early-mid 70's between producing albums, guesting on others, touring with the band and himself, and even putting together the Grateful Dead movie.

The good ol Grateful Dead
This was always one of my favourites by the Dead.

All dead heads share the music. Box of Rain type of thing.

Jerry me too please!
One of my favorite Dead songs. And yes, live is always better! Over 400 shows, so I should know! My daughter, when she had to do her state project in 4th grade, drew Tennessee as her state. She wrote that Jed and his dog were from there. The teacher didn't understand, so she had to explain the Dead's "Tennessee Jed". She also talked about how Jack Daniels was from Tennessee. Teacher must have really wondered about that poor child's upbringing!
You always hear about how the Dead's studio stuff pales in comparison to their live stuff.  And to a certain extent, that's true.  But that said, this is a really nice track.  I like the fiddle.

Gotta love getting here from "Not Fade Away." Love it.

But dammit, give us some LIVE DEAD!!! Please. Just once... or twice. The music is best taken in with thousands of our friends close by.

Isn't "live Dead" like "jumbo shrimp"?

Yeah, maybe it is a generational thing, but as I listen to this I am hearing similarities with this and some of Wilco's music.  Never appreciated the 'Dead all that much but I can see the influences.

I too have noticed some of The Dead's influence in Wilco's tunes, often in Jeff Tweedy's singing style,  While I like a lot of Wilco's material, I was never very moved by The Dead, though many of my friends were devout followers.  I do appreciate their impact and influence though - this song's pretty good.  IMHO

Very insightful comments! {#Clap}

It must be a generational thing because I just don't understand the appeal of the Dead.
But hey, what do I know? With all the emotion these guys drummed up in y'all they deserve respect.

aaaaaahhhhh.....   {#Good-vibes}

OK I was teenager, but I stole somebody?s hit of microdot, having never tripped before, went walking downtown, stole Wake of the Flood on 8 track?not knowing who they were?. I know I was bad, but this is still my first and favorite album by this group. And a great introduction to the psychedelic 60s, albeit I did this in the 70s. I don?t steal anymore?the microdot taught me better.

OK I was teenager, but I stole somebody's hit of microdot, having never tripped before, went walking downtown, stole Wake of the Flood on 8 track—not knowing who they were…. I know I was bad, but this is still my first and favorite album by this group. And a great introduction to the psychedelic 60s, albeit I did this in the 70s. Man, I miss the shows..... :(

How could a girl from Mississippi not like a song about Mississippi.
I gave this a 10 for the lyric. ...then there's the rest.
