Trump further guts Education Dept. by shifting oversight of special ed, civil rights
The Trump administration said Tuesday it will move the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS) to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). OSERS manages programs that support students with disabilities, offering guidance and oversight to ensure states follow the landmark Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), a law that guarantees disabled students access to an equitable public education.
The administration announced it would also move the Education Department's Office for Civil Rights (OCR) to the U.S. Department of Justice. OCR's staff of civil rights attorneys are tasked with protecting students in K-12 schools and universities from discrimination based on disability, gender, race and national origin. OCR has been in tumult for months, targeted repeatedly by the Trump administration for staff cuts, then reversals of those cuts.

Pretty much a Republican waged war on education up here in the Granite State. They already passed school vouchers, then expanded it to universal school vouchers. They are actively pushing school choice (you can go to any school in the state). Net result that I'm seeing is everyone's property taxes are going up while the wealthy people who already send their kids to private school were the first in line to get money from the state. They are moving full steam ahead to privatization of schools. Where I live out in the boonies that would be a freaking disaster.
Tennessee school wonât accept doctorâs notes for absences
Lawrence County School System officials said the school is instituting the policy to teach students work ethic and reliability, saying that students will be expected to go to work sick or injured as adults.
It explains a lot about TN being in the bottom half for performance. Play that out....
- kids come to school sick
- other kids get sick
- some parents eventually say you need to stay home
- school doesn't accept note....
What's next? They suspend the student who they stopped taking notes about because they want to reduce truancy?
You could keep them back a year...which will only ensure they drop out at higher rates.
Drop-outs are 4 times more likely to have negative outcomes than everyone else (arrests, drug use, government dependency, poor health....)
Either the school board members get replaced soon....or the policy in Lawrence county is going to get itself canceled.
At a job.... you get fired. If you don't want to go to school, Lawrence County is going to reward you for not showing up.
