Answer "no" to the "Would you like to receive updates?" pop-up that shows up on every news and magazine site. On some sites I've completely turned off Javascript in the browser settings.

For years I've been clicking the X or clicking off the popup to avoid answering their little question but I finally realized that it's setting a cookie. It probably also measures some other things so it's still annoying but returning to the same site now does seem to throw up a few fewer of those. For how long? We'll see.
