(I keep resurrecting old threads whose posts got chopped by the last BillG clean-up) I am trying to decide whether or not to apply for a copyeditor job close to Cincinnati (a 47 mile commute - so 94 miles every day). I've had commutes before....and they wore me out, wore out my car, and didn't pay enough to cover the added gas/miles.
I really REALLY don't want to live in Cincinnati - the river valley and its various growth and molds makes me miserable. And the humidity is even HIGHER than Dayton. But it looks like a really cool job. Damn it!
Not a good idea. Nope. Uh uh.
There are many, many people out here who have ludicrous commutes. Not only does it burn insane quantities of gasoline and pour tons of carbon into the atmosphere, by having their "house in the country" (just a few yards away from their neighbor's "house in the country" in many cases) they create one of the most revolting aspects of American civilization - suburban sprawl.
When's the last time you've been around here? There are ALL KINDS of places that have really developed between Cinci and Dayton....West Chester, Loveland, Mason, Montgomery.......all in the last decade. And tons of stuff to do!
I don't get down there much so I will certainly take your word for it. I do get to Wapakeneta 3-4 times a year, about as far South as I normally go.
If I recall correctly there is not much of anything between Cincinnati and Dayton.

Is there somewhere in-between Dayton and Cincinnati that you could live if you decided to take the job? You know, do the long commute temporarily and then move once you've got yourself there and established?
Naw, like I said...I really really DON'T want to live in the Cincinnati area. The job isn't worth it to me. I already know exactly where I want to move into (a really wonderful apartment complex in a neighboring suburb in a park, close to everything so I don't have to use much gas) once I'm employed. There will be cool jobs in Dayton, too.
Ok, I've decided. Thumbs down.
I feel like a baseball player....watching for just the right pitch.
I'd been looking for jobs in SB, but then gave up because the economy still isn't so great—especially out there. One needs a huge pocket full of money to go back there (sensibly, anyway.....I flew by the seat of my pants last time and don't have the energy to do that again) - which I didn't have.
So I decided to stick around here for a while longer and see what happens.
Got it. We were damn lucky to get out of TN when we did. The sale of our home was a total and complete fluke, in light of the housing market. Unless that job is your DREAM job or pays a lot, nearly 100 miles round trip a day is not cost effective. Could you rent a room Monday - Thursday nights and head home on the weekends?
My sister used to live with a family who rented rooms in their home, with kitchen, bath, cooking and laundry privileges. One of her roommates was a woman who had gotten a great job with a large publishing company who happened to be local for us but hadn't sold her home back in wherever yet. Her hubby and kids stayed home, she stayed in town during the week and went home on the weekends. The cost of the rental was cheaper than the commute. And she had the schools, community, etc. all scoped out before they moved.
Since you don't really want to live in Cincinnati, is it really worth it?

I used to commute about 90 miles back and forth from Orlando to Tampa when I first started teaching, but I was only doing it twice a week. Though I will say it wore me out. When I was younger, I used to commute from Fort Lauderdale down to Miami, and that was only about 20 miles, but the drive probably took close to 45 minutes (on a good day). It's really just a matter of what you can afford to do and if the job is going to yield the right thing for you moving forward. Sometimes we have to make a short-term sacrifice to get to the final goal.

Well now my commute is literally a few steps I work out of home.
But I worked someplace for 3 years that required a 63 mile one way, 126 mile round trip each day. It takes it toll and you lose more time.
It all depends on the money and the job. If you think you will enjoy the job and the money is good I maight give it a try.
I agree with you about Cincy, I would never live there. I have several friends in Dayton, been about a year since I was there but I would certainly take it over Cincy.
I'm confused. Or at least, not up to date. I thought you were headed back to CA?
