Dick Cheney is back in action, putting together teams for Romney, advising him about policy.

Raise your hand if you would like Dick Cheney running the country again!

We also have a two party system.  As you say, little choice.  However, you are electing the leader of the free world.

Too much money and ignorance. There is no real choice, the whole process is bought and propagandized beyond recognition of any true representative democracy.{#Sad}

Dick Cheney hosts fundraiser for Romney

by Maeve Reston
Los Angeles Times
July 13, 2012

WILSON, Wyo. — On the campaign trail over the last year, there are two names that Mitt Romney almost never mentions: George W. Bush and Dick Cheney.

That approach got tricky on Thursday as Romney brought his campaign to Cheney's home near Jackson Hole, where the former Massachusetts governor mingled with deep-pocketed donors at a country club with views of the towering Grand Tetons in the distance. The private reception for more than 200 donors was followed by a smaller, more intimate dinner at Cheney's house.

The legacy of Bush's administration — the Iraq war, the increase in the federal debt burden and the nation's spiral into recession at the end of 2008 — cast a long shadow over the last presidential contest and was a major factor in John McCain's loss to Barack Obama.

Because of the unpopularity of Bush and Cheney, Romney has kept his distance — never appearing publicly with either man during his 2012 campaign. Though both leaders are admired by many in the Republican Party base, any perception of closeness with Romney could be harmful as the unofficial Republican nominee seeks to draw in independent and moderate voters. (A pool of reporters was allowed into the country club event, but media photos of Cheney and Romney together were not permitted.)...

The author did not imply (as you do) that "Cheney = Pinochet". The author, after all, is from Chile, and knows that what Cheney authorized is orders of magnitude less evil than what Pinochet did. I'm not saying Cheney didn't authorize evil things (he did) but that equating him to Pinochet is like equating Bush to Hitler: childish political hyperbole.

There are further difficulties; the author doesn't seem to understand the constitutional role of the Vice President in our country. He calls Bush his "boss", for instance; the Vice President does not answer to the President. The President can't fire him. Lately (historically speaking) they have been from the same political party (and presumably have similar political objectives) but that hasn't always been the case and isn't constitutionally required.

So the VP running initiatives in the White House is sort of like the president turning over some measure of control to his gardener. The responsibility rests with the President as head of the executive branch. The Vice President has no constitutional authority to order anybody in the executive branch to do anything. If he gave orders the authority those orders had was the President's, not his.

That doesn't absolve him of responsibility, but it means taking on a harder target: the former President.
