Are you on Android 11? I've noticed the RP app has gone haywire since I updated to A11.
Still not clear either what the difference between a buffer and a cache is. Why do I need to buffer when I'm filling a cache? And what's "sync" all about?

For one thing, I'd like to see when you check "Wifi only", anything having to do with cell data is grayed out.

Edit to add: Fwiw, I've moved to PowerAmp for streaming RP .flac. You miss the full effect of the Ken Burns thing (a nice thing to have on in the car) but you do get a lot of sound processing possibilities.
URLs for streaming in a third party app:
The four CD Quality Radio Paradise Lossless FLAC streams are:
Main Mix FLAC (http://stream.radioparadise.co...)
Mellow Mix FLAC (http://stream.radioparadise.co...)
Rock Mix FLAC (http://stream.radioparadise.co...)
Eclectic Mix FLAC (http://stream.radioparadise.co...)

Makes sense, but no VPN installed. On a decommissioned LG V30 without cell access. I've uninstalled after clearing all cache and other data, restarted (power off/power on), reinstalled.

Follow-up question: Under the musical notes icon on the main GUI, there's an option, "Sync" with no explanation. What is this?

That's definitly odd,  if wifi only works with cell enabled,  best guess, is the phone is flagging the wifi as metered for some reason.  Might be a setting to override that somewhere.  But if phone is decommissioned,  shouldn't be any harm in leaving cell data enabled.

Regarding sync.   it will sync with the live stream,  or a device if one is detected.   (  under normal circumstances not something one will use )

Hi Jarro, my IT background is similar to MtnGoat without any app development. I'm struggling to get the app working reliably on Android Auto without killing my mobile data allowance. I loaded the cache from home wifi with 10 hours. On the 2 occasions I've tried to use it en route it has grabbed 150Mb and 350Mb unexpectedly despite (I thought) being strapped to download on wifi only. However, this then made Android Auto think the app was not working, and it seemed to require a halfway house setting with some mobile data access (back to square one data hogging).

Is there a simple(!) guide to android app settings saying what connectivity it needs to function and what can be turned off to minimise/eliminate mobile data use? I'll experiment and report back (my background is in software QA and testing) but I'll admit that Android and smart phones are not my forte...

Update: I have deleted and reinstalled the app and turned off all cell data usage, and it seems to be working (although it could be because the phone is still within house wifi range). I'll try en route when I next drive. I'm simultaneously learning the VW Golf Infotainment system, so several variables are in play and my brain is single threaded...!

Buffering ahead,  allows for hours of offline listening,  but  since it also tries to stay in sync with the live stream it is good to keep some cache blocks as well.  As in some cases it won't have to time to refill the buffer when it syncs with the live stream.

Everything should work over a WIFI connection with cellular data disabled.   I'll see if I can reproduce that.   Only thing that comes to mind is there have been some issues in the past with VPN's  causing WIFI  to be detected as a metered connection.  Which in turn will cause WIFI to be treated as a cellular connection.

"Buffering ahead" is on the Offline listening" page, but it's meant for live listening.
"Cache autofill", I just discovered, will create cache blocks visible, not there, but on the Offline listening page.
And none of that will work without cellular data being allowed (on Android 11).
As I said, I've been in IT for a couple decades, so I feel justified in asking, "WTF?"

To answer your questions,  the buffer ahead feature is more for live listening.  When you expect to be offline for short periods.  It will happily delete downloaded music to stay in sync with the live stream.

The offline/cache blocks are for when you expect to be offline for much longer periods or don't want to use any mobile data.   This music isn't deleted until you listen to it.

The cache auto fill is something more recent.   It will attempt to top up cache blocks when the phone is charging.   Mainly just for convenience for those that mainly use offline cache blocks.   ( also helps with people that have trouble downloading blocks manually during the day )     Can think of it as a low water mark it will try to maintain.   You can always manually add more from the main interface.

Not to be a dick about this, if you all are shorthanded or whatever, I offer my volunteer help. I've always been a Systems kind of technician, but no stranger to app development, and even some coding. Feel free to pm me. This is a great app and just seems to have been in a half-baked state for years now.

I cannot get my head around how to use, or understand the various cache and buffering options and what they apply to.
Why is there a "buffering ahead" option on the cache blocks page? Aren't cache blocks themselves a kind of buffering?
Why is there a Manage cache option to "Add channel", but I already have 2 cache blocks and they don't appear there to manage? Or do they mean different channels? I have no idea.
I'm an IT guy of 25 years, and I'm used to working through confusing interfaces, but this one takes the prize.
Please advise.
