What is Classical music? - Since the question came up, further down below in this thread with someone asking, if it was only the music of the classical period, there is a lengthier explanation of what the term entails on Wikipedia.

And yes, there is Contemporary Classical Music, and Modern Classical Music, too...

What are the 5 basic characteristics of classical music?

The Classical period
  • an emphasis on elegance and balance.
  • short well-balanced melodies and clear-cut question and answer phrases.
  • mainly simple diatonic harmony.
  • mainly homophonic textures (melody plus accompaniment) but with some use of counterpoint (where two or more melodic lines are combined)
  • use of contrasting moods.

And if there is any sort of hypnotic rhythm or groove that is purely by accident. Fun when it happens though.

I love discovering a piece of music I'm not familiar with. The Andante is simply lovely and starts at about 12:10.
