It's Mark's birthday. In honor, I'm listening to Love over Gold. One of the most under rated, fantastic albums of all time.... imo

Sounds good.  I saw the Police last year at the Pepsi Center and was way up in the nosebleeds and the sound was pretty lame - ricocheting off all the concrete and steel.  I saw Elvis C at the Fillmore last year and it was a great show, Alison was especially memorable (crowd singalong), along with What's So Funny...   I heard Sting came out to join Elvis on Alison for the Red Rocks shows. 

I am looking forward to My Morning Jacket August 21st.  From what I've heard, these guys really jam live and transcend the studio recordings.

We were pretty far up for this show, 52nd row out of 70. 

The National started early (6:30PM) while the crowd was milling in.  I had heard The Boxer a few times due to it making so many best of 2007 lists and they didn't disappoint.  The baritone of the vocalist was especially memorable. 

Modest Mouse did a short set and it was fun to see Johnny Marr on guitar. A friend saw them indoors in Orlando recently and said they were painfully loud but at Red Rocks it was perfect.  They did Dashboard but not Float On. 

REM played for about two hours, Mike Mills in Cowboy hat and Michael Stipe was in good voice dancing in a suit and tie.  This was the night that Obama clinched the nomination so Michael was giddy about that.  They played Cuyahoga and Fall on Me, some of my favorites from the early albums. 

My third time seeing REM, missed Bill Berry this time around but no complaints.  This review is still available:

I've seen four shows at Red Rocks so far this summer:

REM/Modest Mouse/The National
Robert Plant & Alison Krauss/Sharon Little
Rush
Steely Dan

All were great in their own way.  Plant and Krauss was probably my fave due to the cleanest sound and very interesting arrangements of three Zep tunes.  It was funny to hear Alison sing the sleazy lyrics of Black Dog.  She did Down to the River to Pray from the Oh Brother soundtrack a capella and you could hear a pin drop.  28th row just right of center.

Steely Dan was very tight and played in the worst weather.  They took a 10 min break during Hey Nineteen to "avoid being electrocuted and move everything back 5 feet."  The band was eleven piece complete with 4 horns and 2 female singers.  The drummer did an incredible job on Aja.  6th row just left of center.

Rush was extremely loud but they can still play very well.  I sort of quit buying their stuff in the mid 80s so didn't know about half the songs.  Geddy had a huge oven of rotisserie chickens behind him with a chef coming out to poke them a couple of times - must be an inside joke.  Fun to see them on Colbert Report last week.  I saw them once before, in 1976 opening for Aerosmith.  25th row on the left side.
