1) It's lightweight
2) It's easy-to-use
3) It's got great reviews
4) It's made by Canon

Considering its intended use and your self-professed skill level, I think anyone in your shoes would be very happy with this camera.

EDIT: It's $12 less expensive elsewhere on the 'Net, and buying from an out-of-state supplier may save you from paying any sales tax.

My daughter's Canon A495 cost about $80. It's not a great camera but we all use it a lot because it's easy to keep handy. Shoots video too. Put all the controls to use and you can make it work out okay, eventually you'll want more speed/zoom/low light capability but on a nice sunny day it's pretty good.

Thanks, Scott and Jagdriver.

I think I would like to be able to take photos at night, and in low-light situations as well as in daylight.

I don't think I need to many other features.

I'd like to get a basic digital camera for mostly tourist-type photos.  In the past, I have not taken many photographs, and when I have, it often has been with one of those disposable cameras. So, I am a novice.

Seems like I would be looking at point-and-shoot cameras. I would think I mostly would be using the automatic-focus function.

A very quick survey of internet last night leads me to believe I could get a good camera for my admittedly limited purposes in the $100 to $150 range, although I could go higher if needed. If I were to catch the bug, so to speak, I know I would need to upgrade, but for now . . .

Any help/suggestions would be appreciated!

Like Scott wrote, it's hard to beat those slim little Canon point 'n shoot cameras. Mine even has anti-shake technology built-in, which is great when the wife is taking the snaps (she has difficulty holding cameras still).

EDIT: Oh, and one of these ~$20 GorillaPods is indispensable:

I am sorry Honey, I guess I missed the humor. It's a difficult message to convey through type. I reposted it in the Congress thread. (btw, I was joking too)

I am having a lovely day, I hope you are too.

Boehner on Dems— "We're gonna kick their ass"

In a closed door caucus meeting today, a source who was present tells me, Speaker John Boehner reassured Republicans nervous about the ongoing budget standoff with Dems by vowing to "kick their ass."

"If we stick together and keep the pressure on the Democrats, we're going to win this fight," Boehner told assembled Republicans, according to the source. "We're gonna kick their ass."...

Here's where Boehner's "kick ass" quote comes in. Republican aides believe that Boehner is closing in on a $30 billion deal with the White House. They think he's using rousing language before the caucus to signal to conservatives that he's drawing a hard line in talks, partly because he knows that ultimately those talks will likely yield a deal that will be difficult to sell to them. Signaling a real fight now could make that sell easier later.

All of which is another sign of how difficult a balancing act the House GOP leadership is walking as the brinksmanship with Democrats intensifies and the shutdown deadline draws closer.
