 Always tough to do mosaic.

I always wished that I could make "happy art" like some people (Mary Engelbreit) do, because I always felt like making art of people crying. This piece is a testament to how I created the space to make happy art. How I can now feel the true joy.

I haven't seen it in art stores for years, but Dick Blick has a short description of it.  They seem to only sell entire sets, but there must be other places where you could buy single sheets.  It's not an absorbent surface so inks sit atop it and take longer to dry.  Wet media gets a little streaky on it, and oils from your fingers make spots on it, but you can paint on it with gouache or other opaque media.  I used to do packaging mock-ups with it a long time ago, and you can clean it with rubber cement thinner.

When I worked at the art supply store in '92, we used to sell it by the sheet, right next to the rubylith and the Letraset. I did a mock up Christmas presentation for the first graphic design class I took, at the community college. No computers in that class.

I think it was originally used by photographers and interior designers.  It's not really "colored" paper; it's "coated" paper - the color is only on one side - similar to the old Letraset PMS-color sheets, but the coating is thicker - more like paint than ink.

Thanks. I recently found a bunch of sheets of that Color-aid in an old portfolio of mine. They'd been in there since the early 1980s.

Color-aid is not the most predictable or controllable surface for wet media, but that's part of the adventure.
