how come you get such a short sea with wind coming from behind the waves like that? Is the tide going out? And that's a Friday! But it's in July, which is peak season. It gets less crowded on a big day. It gets less crowded on days when the wind stretches the length of the gorge instead of focussing only on this section of the river. Sometimes the wind blows 35 mph for nearly 80 miles. Sometimes it blows 50 over a 1/4 mile stretch, while it remains virtually calm elsewhere. Anything can happen.

NoEnzLefttoSplit wrote:dummkopf so's the Thames FRESHWATER. " Atmospheric pressure differentials east and west of the Cascades create a wind tunnel effect in the deep cut of the gorge, generating 35 mph (56 km/h) winds that make it a popular windsurfing and kiteboarding location. The gorge also contains a high concentration of waterfalls, with over 90 waterfalls on the Oregon side of the gorge alone.<2> Many are along the Historic Columbia River Highway, including the notable 620-foot (190 m)-high Multnomah Falls." Not especially tidal.
