The title of this thread perfectly describes the race for mayor of Chicago, replacing Richard Daley, who announced that he will not run again (due to his wife's terminal illness).

Carol Mosely Braun just announced her candidacy, throwing her name into the ever growing list, including Rahm Emanuel. This should all be extremely interesting, considering that there will be white, black, and Hispanic contingencies, all vying for the opportunity to change the shape of Chicago.

Daley certainly has his faults, but he did wonderful things for this city that no one else could. He will be very missed.

You'd think that, but apparently not. The first anyone heard about him was when his candidature as a Literal Democrat appeared on the ballot paper ahead of the Liberal Democrat candidate.

I think that what an awful lot, 10,000 people in the Westcountry, less his friends and family, thought they were doing was voting for a Liberal Democrat (Euro elections are less personality driven, and the general mood was "let's kick the Tories, who's best to vote for to do so?"). So when they where presented with a long list of names spotted what they thought was the Liberal Democrat candidate, ticked the box and off they went. Stupid? No. Victims of thinking they've seen something they want or expect to see. Happens a lot.

Bet the Tories still can't believe how well it went. Sorry, can't believe their luck.

Election law has been changed as a result, but the Chichester aberration was there until fairly recently until he was caught up, oh, sweet irony, in a scandulous brouhaha that I can't be arsed to research google, because it's far too late here.

G'night {#Wave}

Git. Love that little line about being the "non-partisan" candidate - sounds like one from the lawyers.

We had an election for the European Parliament about 12-15 years ago, the Tories were unpopular and the Liberal Democrats were in second place.

Candidates are listed on the ballot paper in alphabetical order, with their party affiliation listed after their name.

A wealthy gentleman farmer who may, or may not, have been a friend of the Tory incumbent took it upon himself to stand as a "Literal Democrat." His surname meant he came first on the ballot paper. He secured something like 10,000 votes, more than the margin of victory of his Tory chum over the Lib-Dem candidate. Possibly the only election to be won through the manipulation of speed-reading.

We think he's doing it to keep the Dem write-in candidate off the ballot.

Police: Woman says she was sexually assaulted during late-night beach outing

Police responded to Dairy Mart at Colorado and East Erie avenues about 4:20 a.m. today and found a wet, drunken woman who was being accused by another woman of sexually assaulting her, according to a police report.

They eventually located a 27-year-old Lorain woman at Dairy Mart. She told officers she didn’t need help, but they observed her clothes were wet, and she told them she’d been swimming. According to the report, she was highly intoxicated and unable to keep her balance. She told officers her clothes were wet because she’d been swimming at the beach with friends.

We have definitely have to do something about the drinking around here.

Now was the man drunk or was the dog drunk?

Gotta love the writing skills of the staff at local papers.
