I only want to say
That if there is a way
I want my baby back with me
'cause he's my true love
My only one don't you see?
And on that fateful day
Perhaps in the new sun of May
My baby walks back into my arms
I'll keep him beside me
Forever from harm
You see I was afraid
To let my baby stray
I kept him too tightly by my side
And then one sad day
He went away and he died
Blue Moon, you saw me standing alone
Without a dream in my heart
Without a love of my own
Blue Moon, you knew just what I was there for
You heard me saying a prayer for
Someone I really could care for
I only want to say
That if there is a way
I want my baby back with me
'cause he's my true love
My only one don't you see?
That if there is a way
I want my baby back with me

Well it made me smile and look to see who it was. Sounds like some musicians having a nice time playing together. You don't always have to be "tearing it up" for it to be good.
I usually adore the Cowboy Junkies, but this song is painful. It sounds like they're all drunk and tired.
absolute amateurs. just awful. all they gave us was ironic gen-x detachment

He's referring either to pedal-steel or dobro, both of which are played with the guitar body parallel to the ground and the strings pointing up.

Kcar, WonderLizard and Ag3ntOrang3... you can play any guitar any way you like... standing on your head if you really want to. Yes the Dobro can be played horizontally like a pedal or lap steel guitar but it is basically a guitar with a metal insert or even completely made of steel and as such it looks and handles just like a normal guitar.
I would say that if you want to use it for Country, Bluegrass or other such genres then horizontal would be your choice.
If you want to play the Blues then you play it vertically like any other guitar.
Some famous guitarists to play it vertically...
Duane Allman
Eric Clapman
Marc Knopfler
Keith Richards
Taj Mahal
and of course leaving the best to last... my fellow countryman...

The thrill of the Trinity Sessions was the unexpected delicacy of Margot and the band.
Attacking the song again with more vigor leaves behind the thing that made it so attractive.

Snoozy.
Good album.....possibly why you hear it played decades later.

No kidding! I can't believe this is the only mention of the similarity/inspiration.

harmonica
Much as I like Margo, sometimes I do wish there was a second vocalist in this band.

Another Cowboy Junkies song, another "meh" from me. This group is waaaayyyy overplayed on RP. If I increase my donation, will it stop?

I for one hope not. I like Bill and Rebecca's independence and eclectic tastes that often force me to step out of my comfort zone.
Don't forget to use the PSD button.

Not good. I've come to really dislike her singing.

I had the volume turned way down and slowly became aware of what sounded like a mooing cow. I'm totally serious. And I almost always like the Cowboy Junkies.
Not a big fan of this version.
The Mavericks do the best job covering Elvis' version of this song.
Check it out!

Because the word "Cowboy" in the band name wasn't a tip-off.
It's odd that so many people seem to have never heard the Cowboy Junkies do this song before now. Trinity Sessions was what, 25 years ago? (edit: Yes, 1988, but I see that this song wasn't on the vinyl, CD-only. I guess people were still buying vinyl then)
Oh dear. Once the old horizontal guitar kicks in then we're entering C and/or W territory, and the harmonica confirms it.

ya.... this one is not so good....
I've never heard this live rendering of the recorded version (also excellent). Thanks for that RP!
That single guitar bubbling up in the middle is so wonderfully lonely.
The accordion is a nice touch as well.

I like covers to be different to the original (or what's the point of the cover), but I'm struggling with this one.
Maybe it will grow on me?

Holy cow. I usually love the Cowboy Junkies, but this offering is, well, not something I'm looking forward to hearing again any time soon.

I think it is important to rate a song for yourself and not what others think. It is a fact that some songs get played here and are so low rated they never get played again. That is a true democracy and while I know some of my musical tastes really grate with the majority who listen here, I don't mind because the system works well.
I have this rule where I won't mark down a song because I wouldn't want to deprive others of something they may like. BUT this song really really makes me want to break that rule.

Song ratings are designed for the individual to rate how they and only they feel about a song. It is a vote, an individuals choice and has no bearing on anyone else's opinion of a song or their ability to enjoy it. I assure you, if I like or dislike a song I could care less what anyone else thinks of it either way. Ain't got nothing to do with me. BTW, I despise Margo's voice so the rest of their music is useless to me as long as she is standing out front singing.

And that's a bad thing?I dunno. I like the Junkies but I put this one in the same category as Sinead singing Chiquitita. Sucko-Barfo.

I have to disagree.
