I can tolerate it in this song. In fact, I find this quite likeable. The effect blends nicely with the music. This is not the usual fare of “hey look, I'm trendy because I use this effect, but I can't think of anything creative to do with it, so I just do the same as everyone else.”

Autotune: digitally processing a recording to correct the vocalist's pitch errors.
Vocodor: using a mic or voice track as the input for a digital filter controlled by an instrument (usually, but not always, a keyboard).
This is a vocodor. To me, the use cases are very different.
Vocoders of one kind or another have been in use since at least the 1970s, when Peter Frampton was a prominent champion of the instrument. He used an analog vocodor ("TalkBox") controlled by his guitar. For what it's worth, lots of people hated that too ;-)
