You're not alone
I'm with you
I'm lonely too

What's that song
Can't be sung
By two?

A broken home
A broken heart
Isolated and afraid

Open up, this is a raid
I want to get it through to you
You're not alone

You're not alone
Every night
I stand in your place

Every tear
On every face
Tastes the same

A broken dream
A broken heart
Isolated and afraid

Open up, this is a raid
I'm gonna get it through to you
You're not alone

An open hand
An open heart
There's no need to be afraid

Open up, this is a raid
I want to get it through to you
You're not alone

I want to get it through to you
You're not alone

I'm gonna get it through to you
You're not alone

*gasp* perfect description!
Opening notes came on in a brand new tv show I was watching with my wife, and I started singing with Ms. Staples right on cue. My wife was impressed . I owe that little win to RP.
One of the finest and purest soul voices in my mind. Nothing but love for Mavis Staples from South Africa.
One of the greats!
This is my first comment on this place. I love and support Radio Paradise with no end in sight.

Thanks alot Bill & Rebecca!
May RP live forever.

All the best from Austria,
Roman.
We all need more of these kinds of raids right now.
I don't know quite how, but I feel connected to Mavis...
I saw Mavis and her band at the Byron Bay Blues Fest last year.  For me and about 500 people, in a tent, it was a religious experience...not to be forgotten.
sublime...
Beautiful!   Saw Mavis about 5 years ago and she is Great!
Creedence Clearwater surely loved this sound and style. Of course, they were covering earlier versions of similar tunes. Wrote a Song for Everyone and Long as I Can See the Light, for starters.

Mavis and Nick Lowe are playing in KC this Sunday. Nick produced one of her songs not too long ago.
A couple weeks ago, NPR weekend edition did a nice interview with Mavis Staples and Jeff Tweedy, talking about Pops and how this recording came to be. A nice piece. Check it out:  https://www.npr.org/2015/02/15/386087925/raising-pops-mavis-staples-and-jeff-tweedy-complete-a-family-circle

Soulful tune from Jeff Tweedy and Mavis Staples.  Love it!

Wow - didn't know this was Mavis Staples, but it's good stuff.  I love the words and the powerful emotion.  Her voice just gets better with age... {#Sunny}

Miss you so much, Cynaera...

love this song...

Like the tone and thesis of this. Mavis handles it well, too. Nice find, Bill.

Jerrieberrie, you make an excellent point, which applies to a few too many of the comments here on RP.  Let's not forget that there can be no black without white, no yes without its "no;" favoring one over the other will only suck the essence out of the preferred.  Kinda reminds me of the climax scene in The Dark Knight, where an apprehended and upside-down Joker (Heath Ledger) lectures Batman on the essential relationship between good and bad....

I think the string on this board revolves around one great big red herring.  To a very large, perverse, degree, the most vocal and vitriolic damnation that is ever applied to music played here is to any music that could in any way be considered "popular" or "corporate".   The hostility is downright disturbing; and I am sure it frightens away a lot potential new members who, if they stuck around and listened, would be exposed to a much wider variety of music than they already are.  Music like Jazz, Blues, and many other sacrosanct, immune-from-criticism-because-if-you-criticize-it-you-are-a-deemed-a-racist, genres are hardly criticized at all here.  Nothing should be immune from criticism.  Nothing is ever "legitimate".  Nothing is safe.  If you do not have a critical eye towards everything, then I'd rather not hear from you at all.

What a beautiful phrase, and so true.
Same for the guitar solo! {#Angel}
Her voice sounds like an old valve amp just warming up, a real organic timbre - love it!
She worked with Jeff Tweedy from Wilco on this song.
Mavis Staples: automatic 9 or above.
Her voice envelops me like warm caramel.

Voice? Or hair? Just kidding you - could indeed be a CRAZY HORSE tune!

FINALLY MUSIC!

Like NIGHT and DAY (in an unallowed comparison to the OLD PINKIES)

That poured right out of her heart! Wow!

Now we talking, love Mavis.

Sending hugs to you - sorry things are not allowing you a "happy-place" to rest and heal! And that pic of Mavis - she positively glows with life. I love this song, because it reminds me that I truly am not alone.  I'm glad it helped you. I wish that saying "hang in there" would be enough, but somehow, hugs work better.  {#Hug}
13 to a dozen song.
I LIKE!
Nice back up band too :)

Soulful. Strong 9
Yes, important comments from both listeners.

There is a lot of thought into the songs played on RP and the variety of music here.  That's what we love.  The experience one gets from exposure to new music you might not have the opportunity to hear if you stay only on safe ground,ie: music/sounds you already know you like, is what is great about RP.  It is truly unfortunate that some folks need to ask for certain songs not to be played and assume that only the music they want deserves airplay.  Life is varied and beautiful and BIG.  There's really not one RIGHT way.  We must co-exist and should learn to appreciate other points of view rather than trying to force everyone into "same" thinking.  Dare I say that none of the world's progress or great inventions or advances in science and technology would ever have come about if different ideas, new thoughts, or other alternatives had not been allowed.  I appreciate and enjoy RP.  If you don't like the song, turn it down until something else comes on or change the channel.  People have choice.  Viva la difference!

I refer to some of the extracts of music and musical styles, which are not properly appreciated and valued by the listeners. And here there is some responsibility for production, that is constantly "channel" the attention, too much, for so-called "soft-rock" (that is trendy screams), and then when you try to "inject" more authors who require hearing demanding, people are surprised. And then if they are not well known authors, there exists a "shock" on the assessments and ...... same time that the production tries to arouse people's attention to authors in the areas of folk, ethnic, african, latin, world music, celtic, country, jazz, blues, etc., the ears of the some listeners seem to suffer a panic attack and momentarily fade .....
Well, it seems that the programming "ideal" would be to give equal exposure proportional to all types of music (even at the expense of losing some listeners usual, but make many others).
As an author before composing a new song, has no guaranteed recipe for success, so the radio also does not know the right recipe.
Still, I have to acknowledge (and thank) for the RP is probably making more effort to the criterion that just spur, on the international radio stations.
And you have no illusions, the majority of interested listeners, are not even registered and have never written a single line in the comments on these pages and never given a score to a song. Listen, enjoy or "stand up" in silence the arrival of "their song" and never protest.

Well said calypsus, as you say a lot of thought has gone into the menu of this Radio Programme and I for one appreciate and listen with an open ear and especially artists I have never heard before, RP is responsible for widening my knowledge of music and to others that I recommend via the artists sites or AMG. And as you say, the moaners seem to have a limited/blinkered ear. My appreciation and thanks go to the Hosts and compilers of an excellent RP.

I absolutely love this song.

REAL MUSIC....

Very nice song on a very busy day in the office...
I need to know how she's  going to get that message through.
I could really use the answer right now.

...nice vibraphone...
Anyone else catch Jeff Tweedy and Mavis singing this at the March to Restore Sanity/Fear? Pretty good stuff then, and I was wondering if it was a Wilco song or hers. Now I know.
i just love me a lower-voiced woman—-this goes good after "One Voice."
"The devil ain't got no music" - gotta love Mavis! She's brilliant!
its a while since I listened to rp. I tune in and this is playing - I gotta tune in more often!

{#High-five} Good one!!  Yep, absolutely one of the best I've ever heard on the World Cafe.  She's a gem - her postivity and optmism had me smiling even after it was over.

Saw Jeff Tweedy and Mavis Staples on the Colbert Report. A very interesting combination.  I like it.
Got the free download from Starbucks and liked it.  Then saw Jeff Tweedy and Mavis do this at the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear.  Nice song.
