[Thurston]
lay down your lucky hand, upon her heart
morning becomes a kite, tangled up in stars
laugh in the midday light, and leave - it behind
move out into his sundry eyes, and sing, unwind
hang down your lucky head, a sign to time
morning becomes the sun, for the dandy line
sooner than the midday light, we leave behind
love is out into the sundry light, you sing, unwind
lay down your lucky hand, upon her heart
morning becomes a kite, tangled up in stars
laugh in the midday light, and leave - it behind
move out into his sundry eyes, and sing, unwind
hang down your lucky head, a sign to time

love is out into the sundry light, you sing, unwind

I just don't get them. I tried, really.
I know she didn't invent it, but I recall reading about Jonie Mitchell's tuning way back around the time she released Blue. Maybe it was Les Paul.
Agree utterly with remarks regarding Sonic Youth's amazing (in the good sense of amazing) sound and how integral the tuning is. Their arrangements where they keep filling in more and more of the sonic spectrum are pretty damn amazing, too.

Well, they tune their guitars all the time... Not in the way you are "supposed" to tune them by the "accepted standards" though. Pay that extra buck or two and the magic that makes them stand out will be gone!
And why the hell NOT do it this way? The possibilities are endless and it is what's made Sonic Youth unique. Not that they invented alternate tunings but in how they applied them to rock music.
Your average polite little band wishes they'd have thought it themselves... Instead, they can usually offer "discretely placed dissonance". In other words, they become irrelevant and bland.

My all-time favorite t-shirt of an album....the Washing Machine!

Yeeouch! Like a lot of SY material, I'd pay 'em an extra buck or two just to have them tune their guitars. I'm all for discretely placed dissonance, but making it the centerpiece of one's style is a little too much for my tastes.

Try Sonic Nurse. At first you will find a couple songs that are easy to like. Then keep after it and you will end up really liking just about the whole album. There's some neat stuff going on in there when you really listen and give it a chance. Kind of like Radiohead.
Sonic Youth seem to be an aquired taste. That said, I just don't seem to have the palate for their dish of rock and roll. Bought this album and listened to it a few times but it never hooked me. But that's not to say they don't have talent, I just find it hard to listen to.

My thoughts exactly. I was quite disappointed when it wasn't.

Just curious, did your boss have a far away look in his/her eyes or did he/she seem intrigued? If it's the former you probably better stick with your work assignment. Some bosses are cool, some not so....
baahahahha. just saw this now. i can only guess, because i dont remember. he probably just told me to shut up.

This is the second gosh-darn song by these lads that I've heard. And loved.
Lads? Kim Gordon is definitely NOT a lad!

Man, Sonic Youth is by far my favorite RP discovery. I just love how they mix a very garagey, raw sound with appealing, lush melodies. Yeah!
This is so cool!! A month or 2 ago I hadn't heard anything by them. I've never heard this song before and I knew it was them after 4 notes!
I listened to "New Hampshire" over 100 times in a week(literally)

I know..."alternative tuning" for the guitar, but anymore the gimmick is wearing old. Sounds like my 10 year old tuned the guitar.
Agree. I really like Sonic Youth, but conditioning makes this one grate the nerves too much.

Sounds to me like a riff rip-off of an old BOC song: "She's as Beautiful as a Foot"

Me too....there's nothing quite like them....I love there sound......

Yeah, they're grandparents now, but wouldn't you love to have such cool old coots around, armed with massive amplifier stacks? They'll have the young folks in the neighborhood calling the cops on them to get them to turn it down! Those whippersnappers. Kids these days.
How about Sonic Long-in-the-tooth?

Must admit, I didn't really know much about Sonic Youth before I came to RP, which is such a rare thing for me. I love it here, don't you?
This is a great tune. Immensely more listenable than some of their other stuff, but then, I'm finding I love postmodern, and the unlistenable stuff I find quite listenable.
There's a scary concept - this is "immensly more listenable than some of their other stuff". My first "1"

I guess even a band as good as Sonic Youth has an off song. That long raucous ending was terrible!
I completely agree! Ouch!!

i think isaac brock had to rip thurston off since sy wrote this 10 years ahead of modest mouse. nice observation, i did not even notice that ever.
both are great songs.

rp needs more sy.

bring on the noize!
that was really cool. i think i'd buy satellite radio if rp was on it, but that might constitute an addiction.
F-IN LOVE SONIC YOUTH!!!
I love when Sonic Youth plays the Cradle. Last time they came through Chapel Hill, they brought one of the brightest, most beautiful lighting kits I've ever seen.
Hm. Dunno. I could like this.

Dont you think he's referring to the one note that about 20 cents off?
