Sun going down in the USA
Down on main there's a family sleeping in a doorway
Around the corner you can hear the sound
People dancing around the golden calf
Those who have not, those who have
On the billboards and the TV screens
They got food and cars and toys and trucks and jeans
Like a homeless child's fitful dreams
Smiling faces free from wanting
Life's abundances beyond counting
World in motion -- speed your changes
Close your distances, find your angels
Lose your fears and meet your dangers
World in motion
Once we were running through smoke and fire
Running into the sun
In the rush of youth, for love and truth
Our deeds were done
Now we awake with a world at stake
And a race we run
We run
Sun going down on the USA
Sun coming up a hundred years away
On another world and another time
Things like hunger, greed and hatred
One way or another, gonna be eradicated
World in motion -- speed your changes
Close your distances, drive your angels
Lose your fears and meet your dangers
World in motion
'till the world i look out at this world and see
Is the world i know this world can be
You have a volunteer in me
Now come on
Down on main there's a family sleeping in a doorway
Around the corner you can hear the sound
People dancing around the golden calf

And that is a stunning scene and a stunning cover.
The pandemic has brought a lamentable opportunity: watching old concerts on AXS. Several days ago I noticed Pops Staples rocking hard beside his daughters as they covered The Weight in Scorsese's The Last Waltz. Amazing film and an even more amazing concert.

his voice just sounds good to me.

Calling Pops Staples "craptastic faux" is pretty close to libelous. He's got Jackson Browne (who wrote the song) and Bonnie Raitt singing backup vocals with him - that he recognizes the relevance of the song, even today, is a testament to how very perceptive he is.
I'd be interested to know what you think is "real" music, because it doesn't get much more real than Pops Staples, unless you want to delve into Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, BB King, et. al.

Yes, it is.
Pops was one of the true great of 20th Century American music. As a young man he saw virtually every great blues player, including Charley Patton, Robert Johnson and Willie Brown and learned his craft from them.

Patriarch of the Staples singers. Father of Mavis. Check out her recent CD -in this vein. Thanks for the headsup on both RP!

Another GREAT tune right out of the blue.
8.
I bought this CD based on this song, which I love. It's a little preachy but musically very good.

Slumming? The man who penned the lyrics is slumming? I'm sorry, but I fail to grasp your logic.
Ow,spank me!That looked like it hurt from here.
Hmmm, sounds a bit like "Tree Top Flyer"

this is right on, in every way.
RIP, Pops!
Love his cover of this (better than the original, most certainly). He'll always be Papa Legba to me!
Great lyrics and need to be heard these days.

Pretty cool cover of a great Jackson tune.
Great Jackson Browne cover, never heard it before and I liked it quite a bit.

I've heard Jackson Browne mention during a concert what a big fan he is of the Staple Singers, so I guess he managed to work something out with Pops.
Wow! I've never heard this before...thanks, Bill.
I don't care who is singing lead....with Jackson and Bonnie in the background, ya can't lose! (No disrespect to Pops....)
Hmm, not so much country as rootsy blues IMO. Great song! Love the vocals here, both lead and backing... I recognized Bonnie Raitt right away, but didn't realize that was Jackson Browne in there too -- thanks for the tip!
Got to get the straw out of my hair!! Getting a bit country here - first Patsy Cline, now this. (By the way - when they sing World In Motion can't help thinking about the New Order Euro'96 song!!)
'bout time I heard this again!!

Yes! That was Jackson Browne's vocals towards the end of the song. I'd recognize that voice anywhere. You should surely listen to old Staple Singers stuff, leslie! Pop Staples with his three daughters, of whom Mavis Staples got most famous (she's still active and worked with Prince, not to long ago), sang the sort of gospel, that would make an atheist fall on his knees and pray!
;)
Sounds great! I'll check it out. Here's another gentleman I haven't heard of before, but I will definitely check out his music now.

Bonnie Raitt (background vocals and slide guitar) has done so much to bring forgotten blues artists back into the limelight. Here\'s another gentleman I haven\'t heard of before, but I will definitely check out his music now. Thanks Bonnie, and thanks RP!

Jackson wrote the song. Title track of his 1988 album.
