I've watched the stars fall silent from your eyes
All the sights that I have seen
I can't believe that I believed I wished that you could see
There's a new planet in the solar system
There is nothing up my sleeve
I'm pushing an elephant up the stairs
I'm tossing up punchlines that were never there
Over my shoulder a piano falls
Crashing to the ground
In all this talk of time, talk is fine
But I don't want to stay around
Why can't we pantomime, just close our eyes and sleep sweet dreams
Me and you with wings on our feet
I'm pushing an elephant up the stairs
I'm tossing up punchlines that were never there
Over my shoulder a piano falls
Crashing to the ground
I'm breaking through
I'm bending spoons
I'm keeping flowers in full bloom
I'm looking for answers from the great beyond
I want the hummingbirds, the dancing bears
Sweetest dreams of you
I look into the stars
I look into the moon
I'm pushing an elephant up the stairs
I'm tossing up punchlines that were never there
Over my shoulder a piano falls
Crashing to the ground
I'm breaking through
I'm bending spoons

R.E.M - one of the most overrated bands on Earth, and far too much of it played on here - let's have some balance Bill - Less REM/U2/Vega.
Damn what is it about this band? I was never a particular fan even though I liked their music, but their songs always come up with a terrible nostalgic pull.
REM is great. Nice to hear the Rickenbacker again.
Forgot about this track; love it!
first time i have wanted to change the station. does not suit RP." I'm...I'm...I'm..." enough navel gazing!
I love REM. It is rare for me to not enjoy the experience of listening to them and this is no exception.
bland, like the Eagles
Nice! Never get tired of this one. Love the lyrics.
there's an oldie but a goodie
Very good song, thanks for PSD selection.
REM songs all have that self absorbed vibe to them: I'm sorry. That's me in the corner. Yuck.

And what ever was the big deal with Andy Kaufman? He was never much more than a childish nit-wit, whose "talent" was marginal at best. Oh I know! He died, which suddenly made him into an "icon"...

I really like this song. I used to enjoy R.E.M. more than I do now, but this one is exceptional.
such a 10. Stands the test of 1) play 2) turn up volume 3) repeat cycle
Yes, oh my god this guy just wont go away. Always sounding the same. The one good alblum and then....that was the extent of their musical register. ANd yes, agreed with the previous poster, they just simply suck.

REM sucks! Michael TRIPE sucks!
I liked their music back in the college daze but they haven't developed at all. Boring whine - totally uninspirational. Bla bla bla...
Every time I consider donating more to Radio Paradise. REM comes on and makes me turn off the station and look for something else.

Great song. Oh, wait, was this from when they were great or when they were no longer "classic" and sucked?, 'cause this sure sounds good to me.
great song. Love this one
I like this one!!

Maybe you should check out the jihadists on the Radiohead song commentaries. . . plenty of love and hatred there too
REM and Coldplay get more hatred and love in the same forum thread than any other bands played here.

Stipe reaches new levels of whininess in this song!
The lyrics kinda bring to mind the most enjoyable movie 'Phenomenon'
This still sounds really fresh to me
I enjoy the fact that this song has two choruses. Unusual structure.

Of course the earth would probably seize up and puke him out.
Well at least you're not biased!
Always good to hear an REM tune.
Huge REM fan. Never heard of this one, though. Strange. I like.

LOL. Hell yeah, but only one song from New Adventures in Hi-Fi and nothing from after that.

I forgot about this song. I remember liking it, and I realize I still do. 7.

Some comedians sure lead hardly dull lives, huh? You could have a box set---Kaufman, Farley, Pryor, Hartman, and on and on and on...

Anything by REM works for me...anything!
I'm not an REM fan but this song transcends.
Thank you!
the hybrid remix of this is incredible
This is one of my favorite hits of the band even though, like most of the others, it suffers from excessive repetition of unchanging material.
I prefer REM when you can't understand what Michael Stipe is saying. It makes it much more interesting.
Chronic Town, Poster Torn --- now that's some lyrics. This would be good on a road trip mix though.
Volume up!!
:headache.gif: Everybody hurts would have been more appropriate for the morning after St. Pattys day.

Agreed ... what do you define as "newer" efforts though?

Waiting to see what REM will do for the Chris Farley movie... :p
This one has always given me chills. Love it.
I don't know, I like this one. Certainly not as terrible as everyone is saying. And for hell sake, the movie was about Andy Kauffman. I enjoyed it, but really, how great could you expect it to be?
It's a shame about this song. Sounds like the result of an obligation reluctantly fulfilled. In this case, a soundtrack piece for a disappointing movie. Andy deserved better all around.
More evidence of the decline of a great band. :(
This song is ok...
I really don\'t get peole slagging off this song. It\'s great! REM continue to produce super music and I love them!
Andy Kaufman, if I\'m not mistaken.

Hate to be dense, but I missed the song. Who's it about?

Yup they have written a lot of excellent songs, really good stuff BUT they have also made a great deal of extremely boring songs, and unfortunatly i think this is one of them.
