I knew what you were saying, you were saying to me
Baby's got some new rules
Baby said she's had it with me
It seems a shame to waste your time on me
It seems a lot to waste your time for me
Left me to love
What it's doing to me
There's a lot of honey in this world
Baby this honey's from me
You've got to do what you do
Do it with me
It seems a shame to waste your time for me
Left me to love
What it's doing to me
Knocked silly, knocked flat, sideways down
These things they pick you up and they turn you around
Say your piece
Say you're sweet for me
It's all the same to share the pain with me
It's all the same, save the shame for me
Left me to love
What it's doing to me
Baby's got some new rules
Baby says she's had it with me
There's a fly in the honey
And baby's got a baby with me
That's a part, that's a part of me
Left me to love
What it's doing to me
Left me to love
What it's doing to me
What about me?
What about me?
For Mike and other female vocalists, check out Your Ghost by Kristin Hersh and The Way You Dream by 1 Giant Leap. Both of which are gems played here.
Doesn't he do one with Natalie Merchant as well?
Well maybe it's you that has not aged well. This album never goes out of time.
"Baby said she's had it with" you
REM songs have not aged well. I used to buy everything the recorded. Can't listen to any of it now. Kate's voice on this doesn't work so well. Sounds a bit like she's doing a parody of herself. The list of additional musicians on this album is ridiculously long - you would think Roger Waters had just left the band.
I disagree completely with this statement.
Really makes me wish that Mike made another duet with her. Or really with another female artist for that matter. This one really shines.

One of the most underrated bands of the 90's...and in rock and roll in general
Underrated? They are considered not only one of the most successful bands in history but one of the most talented. Not sure where you are getting your information.
Their inclusion of B-52s' Kate Pierson was nothing less than brilliant, and ensured both groups' resurgence and immortality. Still a TEN
There must be something in the water of Athens, Georgia.
Isn't Fred Schneider the lead singer of the B52's?
I think it was considered more of a group effort.
Oh well, guess it's easy write about the thing you love the most.

Actually he did - with Patti Smith.

Because it already IS!
Did I just wake up back in grad school? Would that it were so simple.
Also in grad school, in Atlanta, at this time. WRAS, Georgia State University radio, was a new wave station that gave much air time to the Athens sound, this and many talented but lesser known groups as well. What a great time musically to be there!
They need to bottle and sell it!
Lead singer of the B52s. Brilliant.

This tune reminds me of a bagpipe type of drone almost.
But in a good way........with or without kilts.
Not a fan of that Stipe's personality, but do enjoy a lot of REM tunes.
Overall, this song works for me.
Beat me to it! And the janglicous guitar hook!
"UNDERrated"?!? Quite the opposite...
I like song & album, but in general this band is played way too often here.
Agree with the last bit.
If this was an unknown band, wouldn't the comments be all "monotonous, yawn, uninspired, drone, please don't play"...?
Old post, I know, but relevant.
The Bristol office cranks this up to a 10 today, too.

Hum underrated, i don't know, i remember they were Rolling stones magazine favorite band for a long time !
Well maybe it's you that has not aged well. This album never goes out of time.
I'll join you in that. "Classic rock" radio killed REM for me, so it's good to hear a captivating tune that wasn't murdered and borified by offputting ad finitum FM Twister repeats.
Cause they used to sing with '' BellowHead''
why... why..... its so boring and generic
you forgot to add the Eagles
why... why..... its so boring and generic
Yep, love the transition from Lindsey Buckingham to Kate Pierson. THAT is thoughtful programming.
Godlike indeed.
EXACTLY!!!

You're right. Knocked it down to a 9.
9 sounds about right. Great song.
More likely something else that hasn't aged well.
You're right. Knocked it down to a 9.
Amen that.
Really?
I think they didn't want to be be grouped in with those "whispery-voiced singers" that so many RP listeners seem to despise.
if I may refine that a bit
REM x IRS = CRANK IT UP DUDE!!!
REM x WB = TURN THAT CRAP OFF!!!
Hah. I was a DJ in Dewey Beach, DE when this album came out.
I think you're maths a bit off there mate.
Kate the great!
Love Kate.
To bad I'm not her type.
That is a good limb you are out on, boober... everybody in my alien space craft loves this song...
hope life is grand for you right now, boober...
Shouldn't it be called Me 'N' Honey?
miss you so much, Cynaera...
everybody in my homeless camp loves this marvelous song soooo much... we love this beautiful and timeless album...
Kate the great!
Everybody all over the world leaped to their feet! We be dancing! LOVE THIS SONG!
Forty women in my mushrooming multitude of churches just said they love this song... we be dancing licentiously...
This and Shiny Happy People...Kate, I love you...and The B52's...the people I work with don't know who these artists are...go figure!

I generally like REM. I never bought any of their albums but there are many songs I enjoy. To the point of bands that I've bought all there albums and gone to their concerts I think that may be the problem. Too much of a good thing. There are bands that I also used love that I can't listen to anymore. Some of it's gone stale, some I have grown to dislike, some I just wore out. That's why when a favorite song comes on now I hit mute if I've heard it recently. I don't want to grow tired of it.
