I ain't from Texas, but I made my way from Dallas
And I know the lonesome sound is following
And I ain't a gambler, but I can recognize a hand
And when to hold, when queens are staring back at me
Once I was a carpenter, and man my hands were calloused
I could swing a metal mallet sure and straight
But I took to the highway, a poet young and hungry
And I left the timbers where they lay

Forever I will move like the world that turns beneath me
And when I lose my direction I'll look up to the sky
And when the black cloak drags upon the ground
I'll be ready to surrender, and remember
Well we're all in this together
If I live the life I'm given, I wont be scared to die

And I don't come from Detroit, but her diesel motors pull me
And I followed till I finally lost my way
And now I spend my days in search of a woman I called purpose
And if I ever pass back through her town I'll stay

Forever I will move like the world that turns beneath me
And when I lose my direction I'll look up to the sky
And when the black dress drags upon the ground
I'll be ready to surrender, and remember
Well we're all in this together
If I live the life I'm given, I won't be scared to die

And my life is but a coin, it's pulled from an empty pocket
Dropped into a slot with dreams of sevens close behind
And these hopes and these fears go with it, and moon and the sun go spinning
Like the numbers and fruits before our eyes
Sometimes I hit, sometimes it robs me blind
Sometimes I hit, sometimes it robs me blind

Forever I will move like the world that turns beneath me
And when I lose my direction I'll look up to the sky
And when the black cloak drags upon the ground
I'll be ready to surrender, and remember
Well we're all in this together
If I live the life I'm given, I won't be scared to die

Don't hear the Christian thing. Not every carpenter is from Nazareth.

That's funny
Much prefer their earlier, rawer, more country-fied stuff.  Saw them live in 2010 and it was a great show, though.
Wow, this is truly one of the worst songs I've ever heard on RP. Thought I had tuned into a different station.

This is NOT country. Try Christian Folk.

Why, yes he is. He'd be drop-dead gorgeous with clean hair and a nicely trimmed beard. But I wouldn't kick him out of bed as is. {#Smile}

Alt-Country.  I know it's true because Wikipedia says so... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_alternative_country_musicians

I can definitely see why people hate these guys here but I like them. Maybe I just haven't heard enough country in my life...

Just more crappy alt-country.

I agree—-i've heard it a few times and he has a sincere voice; but there is an insincerity to it. It could be just me...
Nice song but could listen to about half of it around a campfire then i got bored.
Tastes like Sugar Mountain to me.
Remember way back when, when all the Avett Bros songs got instantly axed from the LRC?  Yeah.  LOL

This is a great album
I consistently like their sound.  Was not familiar with this song, but it got my attention and so...
I know you're all going to think I've completely lost my mind (duh) but something in this song reminds me of an old Michael Nesmith song!!!

no need to be sorry, I am constantly amazed at your uptime and quality of programming.  Thank you, my friend, for music such as The Avett Brothers and so many more artists that I have learned about from RP.

In complete agreement with GawgaBoy!!  {#High-five}   {#Yes}

This song is really soothing, I think.

It may take awhile for it to show up though...

I love pretty much everything I hear from these guys.....if I actually still purchased albums, it would be in my collection.
This song is genuinely banal.

I've had this album playing on repeat on NPR and it is delicious. Can't wait for it to arrive.

Ditto here.  I ordered it direct from the Bros website today figuring they would get a few more pennies that way.  Just got back from SB by the way.  Sure is a nice place to be.
