A heart that's full up like a landfill
A job that slowly kills you bruises that won't heal
You look so tired, unhappy bring down the government
They don't, they don't speak for us
I'll take a quiet life, a handshake of carbon monoxide

And no alarms and no surprises, no alarms and no surprises
No alarms and no surprises

Silent, silent, this is my final fit my final bellyache with

No alarms and no surprises, no alarms and no surprises
No alarms and no surprises please

Such a pretty house and such a pretty garden

No alarms and no surprises (let me out of here), no alarms and no surprises (let me out of here)
No alarms and no surprises (let me out of here) please

I have the house to myself for a few days.  I almost never play music from my speakers  because it is disturbing.  I am playing this song for the first time on a set of decent speakers.  What a difference!!
Looking through the comments below, I understand that many of my fellow RP denizens simply don't feel the Radiohead vibe.  That's fair.  But for me, and likely many other based on the extent of the 10's, I have to say that this track is a heart breaker.  It doesn't require perfect tone, cause when you've spent a day or two in that special ward with the glass observation windows...you know how this song feels.  So, maybe you should be happy that it doesn't make you quietly choke up...cause you've never been there...

Radioheads are already like that ... yummy music but the words ... But they knew why they wrote such lyrics ...

I always skip track 7. It almost feels like a gimmick/skit track. By that I mean it just doesn't hold up the way the rest of the album does.

(Although when Bill plays Karma Police, I always say "Fitter, happier, more productive" at the end, so what do I know about anything!)

"Happy" music generally doesn't seem to resonate as much.  Other than The Beach Boys, how many band photos have you seen where the members are smiling?

20 years ago now this album was released.  Time flies.  Still epic though.
This cut is very reminiscent of early Kinks songs.

I don't hear any Beach Boys song here though. Like Scrubbrush said earlier, this is a great album that should be heard as a whole.

Like the music, the tuneless singer Mr. TH takes me right out of it. Did someone kick the studio cat?

This whole album is fantastic. I like a few other Radiohead songs from other albums (fewer recently) but THIS album is on par with dark Side of the Moon as far as I'm concerned. The album should be listened to straight through a few times to really appreciate how cohesive it is.
He's still whining, and nicely out of tune this time ...
Imagine what these boys could achieve if they were happy.
What an adequate tune for christmas time {#Whistle}
But seriously: wonderful, charming, outstanding! It's curious, I don't know how to handle Radiohead. Their range goes from genius to garbage, nothing in between.
Unlike the song's title, Radiohead was FULL of surprises when they were killing it.

Yorke did not need the ole haddock slap when the boys did OKC.... Now it may be in order after a decade and a half of self indulgent intellectual noodling
I always felt like Ok Computer was a breakthrough album in 1997, the rare and unique sound that jumped out and held its ground above everything else being recorded over a period of time.
{#Hug}Love IT. Great album - best song on the album; thanks Bill.

I can't believe I didn't have this rated. I don't know that there's a track on this album that would belong below an 8, maybe even 9...
Love the lazy drawl. Love the clever way the melody snakes its way through the verse.

The chorus is just not as strong as it might be, but the backing vocals in the final one make up for it.

Beautifully constructed.

It's not pointless in general, but in the case of Radiohead, it is.

You want to make a relevant point, compare them to Joy Division.  Compare Thom Yorke to Tim Buckley.  Johnny Greenwood to Miles Davis (not as much a stretch as you might think).

But PF and RH are like apples and oranges (and I happen to enjoy both for different reasons).

Critically acclaimed, massively influential and hugely popular.

Some of you are clearly missing something.

Listen to the catalogue - the variety, the innovation, the musicianship and the creative use of the vocal as instrument in the mix.

Then read the lyrics and they are pretty great too.

Actually, only "clueless" was directed at me, but I went after the others too.  I'm on this mission because, of all places, the RP comments pages should be a place where you can say whatever you want, without the risk of personal attacks.

I find your "move on" comment kind of ironic —- you're doing a bit of "hanging around" too, so one could query from whence the odor is actually emanating.

I suppose I could say something like, "Well, really the smell in the elevator comes from the sh*t for brains that some of these pedantic Radiohead fans have, and if I was them I'd be really embarrassed", but that would be stooping to your level.

As you can see, any monkey can hurl insults.  In adult discourse, that doesn't happen.

In the RP context, I would suggest that people with "dignity" could reasonably be expected to restrict their comments to the music and not other listeners.  That has been my point since the very beginning, and something that apparently has been lost on you.

"Sookie-la-laaahh"?  Grow up.

As for the "best band" of all time comment.  That was a wine-induced late night comment that happens to accurately reflect my true feelings.  Actually, in recent years I have toned my enthusiasm for Radiohead down, if you can believe it.  I used to annoy the hell out of people.  If I were a writer, I would write a 6 volume treatise on OK Computer.  For me, it is that good.

Do you own it?  If not, I think it's well worth your time to give it a proper listen several times.  If you hate it still, I can understand that perfectly.  I hate a lot of so-called great art.

Fair enough about legitimacy, especially given my comments below re "taste is what you like".  I meant that most of the RP "standards", if you will, Ray Charles, Dave Brubeck, even the Beatles, have stood the test of time.  And really only time will tell if Radiohead is in the same league.

Questionable musical taste notwithstanding, you seem like an enlightened type.  Pleasure to make your acquaintance.

My personal view, which is that Radiohead sucks, aside, you'll just never get a consensus on that —- for instance, check out the string for Come Together by The Beatles.

For you, Radiohead may be "the greatest band (by far) of all time."  The comments you refer to, the "more negative than positive" ones, just beg to differ.

Me too.

BTW, just saw the Grammy thing —- Radiohead and the USC marching band.  The boys could do worse than to steal some more pages from Lindsay Buckingham's book.

I am with you.  People should not be made to feel abashed to post their true feelings.  There's nothing wrong with some good old back and forth though.  Notice I don't call people "trolls", or other expletives, a practice which I detest.  I have made plenty of negative posts myself.

Oh yeah, almost forgot.  Totalitarian states notwithstanding, there is no such thing as "legitimacy" in art.

Radiohead songs are like punching bags at RP, so many frustrations taken out!  More negative comments than positive.  That's fine, as long as Bill keeps them coming.  What I don't get is why every time a sacred cow comes on, Ray Charles for example, no one has anything bad to say.  Why do so many want to rip the greatest band (by far) of all time?

What a riot.

"Music opinion credibility" is an oxymoron.  Taste is what you like.

And I won't bother to get into the relative merits of Radiohead and Oasis.  It panders to that whole superiority complex that some Radiohead fans seem to have.

Posts like yours prove the point.

Ahhh...perfect for a Friday afternoon!

Don't bother arguing with this keller1 guy. He gave Oasis a 10. You either get it, or you don't. We've got better things to do than write a list about Oasis fans. And we don't bother peppering their song comments page with endless provocative remarks. Your music opinion credibility is zero I'm afraid.
