I'm only happy when it rains
I'm only happy when it's complicated
And though I know you can't appreciate it
I'm only happy when it rains
You know I love it when the news is bad
Why it feels so good to feel so sad
I'm only happy when it rains

Pour your misery down
Pour your misery down on me
Pour your misery down
Pour your misery down on me

I'm only happy when it rains
I feel good when things are going wrong
I only listen to the sad, sad songs
I'm only happy when it rains

I only smile in the dark
My only comfort is the night gone black
I didn't accidentally tell you that
I'm only happy when it rains
You'll get the message by the time I'm through
When I complain about me and you
I'm only happy when it rains

Pour your misery down...pour your misery down
Pour your misery down on me...pour your misery down
Pour your misery down...pour your misery down
Pour your misery down on me...pour your misery down
Pour your misery down...pour your misery down
Pour your misery down on me...pour your misery down
Pour your misery down...pour
You can keep me company
As long as you don't care

I'm only happy when it rains
You want to hear about my new obsession
I'm riding high upon a deep depression
I'm only happy when it rains...pour some misery down on me
I'm only happy when it rains....pour some misery down on me
I'm only happy when it rains...pour some misery down on me
I'm only happy when it rains...pour some misery down on me
I'm only happy when it rains...pour some misery down on me...
pour some misery down on me
pour some misery down on me
pour some misery down on me

Saw Garbage back in the day in a small nightclub.  She took the stage and the crowd was on their feet and mesmerized for the entire set.
You go Shirley!!!

Yaza baga waga.  Gulp.
Well, if she's only happy when it rains, she should consider moving to Prince Rupert.   ; )
More Garbage please

Solid album. Produced very well by Vigg. This album encapsulates late 90's Alt-Rock.
At the time this song sounded amazing in terms of mastering. Now it sounds dated!

It also sounds quieter than current recorded music. Annoying that music keeps turning up the volume.
I agree with comments below.

Please play more Garbage. They get it: RnR.

Bill you need to play more Garbage!  ;)
This song = a night during college, ah those 90's are a bit far away now!
that's funny, it totally sounded like bill just said, "charlie manson and garbage." ha!

more GARBAGE tracks active in the RP rotation would never be a bad thing :)

The band created in 1993 are: Scottish singer Shirley Manson (vocals, guitar), 45 years old, excelent performer on stage, with an impressive physical appearance and aesthetics, and American musicians Duke Erikson (bass, guitar, keyboards, percussion), Steve Marker (guitar, keyboards) and Butch Vig (drums, percussion), are experienced musicians, with a mean age about of 50 years. All four members are involved in songwriting and production of original songs.

I was struck by two things in this essay, the odd punctuation and the fact that the age of the female band member was mentioned but not the age of any of the male members...just saying...seemed odd. Nice essay, I agreed with some of it but certainly not the bit where only a person that can't make it in business or academia would choose art as a career. Perhaps I read that wrong, though.

Good post, really?  He makes the exact same post over and over and over.  It is actually quite wrong in several ways.  First and foremost, no band can simply go out and sell lots of records at will, with or without a record company's help.

Let's be really cynical for a second and say the record companies really do have that kind of magic wand and skill to manipulate the "masses" like that.  If that is true, then that ability to manipulate is still a very real skill, it is an art.  Getting lots of people to buy records, entertaining them, pleasing them in that manner, would definitely be considered an art form that requires great skill.  It would not be the same skill as making truly great music, but it is still a great skill.

If you follow these things like I do, you'll notice rather quickly that to be a famous anything (poet, philosopher, painter, etc..) then the genius is almost always twofold: (1) skill in the art of self-promotion (or someone's promotion on your behelf) and (2) skill in the art of the medium itself.

He does have a point about artistry, but that quality in the artistry is very difficult to pin down.  Every single act that he considers to be "sell-outs" or "crass marketing ploys" have very serious followings by devoted fans.  I could dismiss as crass Coldplay, Elvis, and Ray Charles, music I detest and I think extremely commercial, and ALL rap.  But there are many people who think they are the cats meow.

This is an example for many artists, to they do not find themselves hostages, and manipulated by the publishers, voracious easy profits, which relegates, and often ignore of artistic quality, and seek to impose on radio stations what should and should not be displayed on airplay (through sponsorship), and thus manipulate and guide the public taste.

How could not it be, here's some advice, this time for Shirley Manson: it might be good for her, take a californian-sunbath, not necessarily at the beach, at the beginning of the morning or late afternoon, to tone the skin a little (she is a type of skin color "greenhouse flower").

One last word to say: We've seen watching an emergence of new singers, bands, duos, I dunno, proliferating like mushrooms, throwing hundreds or thousands of records.

Anyone who thinks has some way to music (the lack of stable employment or academic career), comes to wanting to be an artist.
The problem is that this stunned oversupply, a lack of equivalent quality, which in other times, no producer would accept even an experiment. Today, it feels that it is all too easy, too "over the knee," to lightly, as a simulated climax.

The artistic level for new talent is very low, if not horrible, because they are not able to create and compose "songs made from root", from the use of traditional instruments, then resort to artificial electronic processes and samples of pre-made in studio, the latter also of very poor quality.

Today, will soon play for radio, then easily accepted in the summer festivals (to fill time with cheap artists, to established artists at the end), easily nominated for "premium" "awards" and are already at a glance, alleged "stars". And this is how it works, the machine market.

No way.

That is to say today to this poverty of musical creation, are the bands with more than 20, 30-year career, they feel the "call" to re-enter the scene, i.e. band Garbage.

LOVE this song.... never 'heard' it before - ie never really listened to the lyrics.  Great stuff.
Thanx Bill! Loved this track from when it first came out - powerful performance, tight production and a such a great contradictory experience!
This band is aptly named.
This is pretty good band that never got enough credit.
On the RP IPad ap you pretty well need to strain your eyes to read blue font because the background for comments is black as opposed to the white you get on the explorer web browser.

I have to give a nod to the phrase "precocious ejaculation" you will find below if you can follow it long enough.

Geez, I needed this now.  Great all weather song.   One of the best debut albums of any band.
Excellent music. Some of the dumbest lyrics ever.
Poor your misery down on me.

Butch Vig - great producer - good drummer -found himself an excellent frontwoman in Shirley Manson.

Love Shirley and her accent.  She has the right heroes - Patti Smith and Chrissie Hynde.

Too easy.
We are happy here in West Virginia. We have had enough rain to fill an ocean lately.

Where is the ubiquitous photo for Shirley?
Cruisin' the burbs in my buddy's black 944 with the 15" sub in the "trunk" with this tune cranked...

Ahh... embarrassing high school memories.
I am only happy when it rains because then it is not snowing. What an uplifting tune.
GARBAGE DAY!
A mainstay on my iPod. Garbage and Hole are under-rated.
Love this song! Brings back good memories from the 90's.

Not in the slightest.. I'm right there with you.   This song is a great advert for depression.
Mind you, my ex-wife always said that seeing Garbage playing live was what prompted her to take up what turned out to be an ill-fated  shot at pop stardom.  Music lovers the world over should berate Garbage loudly for being such a bad influence.

August 1995 as the "this version released" notation says.  Not sure what that 2004 entry is about unless Bill forgot to populate it and it was picked up from some other entry.

Anyway, it's raining here and I'm happy.  Good enough.

I always thought this was one of their lesser songs. . . but they were fantastic. . .

I agree with those saying this is probably their best song, although admittedly I did not listen to much of their stuff...

as a side note - the playlist says this was in 2004 - i'm thinking it should be 1994...?

Apparently I'm not shallow enough to get what this song is about. Fine by me. A solid 1. shuttlecr wrote:

Of course they are - that's the point. Haven't you ever known anybody who seemed determined to be unhappy, who always found the bleak interpretation for everything, who seemed to find fulfillment in being disappointed? Alpine wrote:

Wow, I so don't care. Some songwriting is so self-involved. I don't expect to hear this too far into the future.

I have to upload "Happy when it rains" with the Jesus & Mary Chain one of these days.
Reminds me of seeing Ms. Manson leaving Ancora Coffee, presumably on her way back to Smart Studios, in the pouring rain, looking less than happy.
I am ridng high on a deep depression! Witty, and a darn good song.
I'm not so sure bands should call themselves such names? I guess Trash was taken... but Flatulence, as far as I know, is still available!
We loves it, yes we do...pour your misery down on me, baby....
Blech
Ahhh....back when Garbage was good.
This band seemed so fresh when they first hit, and this still sounds great. What the heck happened to them?
Loving this. It's interesting that when Miss Manson was interviewed a while back on some TV show, she was asked what her least favourite Garbage track was. And she said she utterly hated singing this one. Can't imagine why. I think it's classic Garbage in a good way.
King Richard Coffee here in Tucson has a slogan: "When it pours, we reign." I guess seeing "Rain King" followed by this one made me thing of that. Mainstream radio cut from a band with a lot more to offer.

Having looked at the long list of bands/singers you rated 3 and below I am not really surprised by your low rating of Garbage. Kinda makes me wonder why you listen to RP. You have several dozens of songs rated as "1" but only 3 you've rated as "10". A statistical review of your overall rating system suggests that you find the bulk of what's played on RP to be sub average. It seems like you stay here on RP because you enjoy listening to music you don't like and then flaming it.
