I sat there looking ugly, looking ugly and mean
I knew what you were saying, you were saying to me
Baby's got some new rules
Baby said she's had it with me

It seems a shame to waste your time on me
It seems a lot to waste your time for me
Left me to love
What it's doing to me

There's a lot of honey in this world
Baby this honey's from me
You've got to do what you do
Do it with me

It seems a shame to waste your time for me
Left me to love
What it's doing to me

Knocked silly, knocked flat, sideways down
These things they pick you up and they turn you around
Say your piece
Say you're sweet for me

It's all the same to share the pain with me
It's all the same, save the shame for me
Left me to love
What it's doing to me

Baby's got some new rules
Baby says she's had it with me
There's a fly in the honey
And baby's got a baby with me
That's a part, that's a part of me

Left me to love
What it's doing to me
Left me to love
What it's doing to me

What about me?
What about me?

REM songs have not aged well. I used to buy everything the recorded. Can't listen to any of it now. Kate's voice on this doesn't work so well. Sounds a bit like she's doing a parody of herself. The list of additional musicians on this album is ridiculously long - you would think Roger Waters had just left the band.

I generally like REM. I never bought any of their albums but there are many songs I enjoy. To the  point of bands that I've bought all there albums and gone to their concerts I think that may be the problem. Too  much of a good thing. There are bands that I also used love that I can't listen to anymore. Some of it's gone stale, some I have grown to dislike, some I just wore out. That's why when a favorite song comes on now I hit mute if I've heard it recently. I don't want to grow tired of it.
Oh Kate Pierson...pure magic.

Doesn't he do one with Natalie Merchant as well?
hurts my ears so much everytime he sings MEEEE

"Baby said she's had it with" you
Had to bump this to a 10
Irregardless whether or not the songs are good or bad, they're getting played in an endless repetitive cycle that is getting shorter and shorter. It's taking the fun out of it.
What a voice!  10 from me
From Sheila Chandra to REM: Excellent match!
More R.E.M. across any year, please! Their older stuff is great, middle obviously popular and arguably great, and their late-career stuff really good too. I rank R.E.M. in my top two American bands.

I disagree completely with this statement.

Underrated?  They are considered not only one of the most successful bands in history but one of the most talented.  Not sure where you are getting your information.

There must be something in the water of Athens, Georgia.
One of those highway driving songs. Thanks RP!

I think it was considered more of a group effort.
Another boring REM song, Skip.
The M.S. Drinking Game: take a drink every time he says "I" or "Me" in his songs.  Careful, you'll get hammered very quickly.

Oh well, guess it's easy write about the thing you love the most.
Although I literally have an ‘80’s’ tee shirt that says ‘heretic’ hanging on my bedroom wall, this album is not good, although I consider them the most influential bad post Beatles?

Actually he did - with Patti Smith.
A tedious busk even by their standards.

Because it already IS!
Love a good dirge with harmony

Also in grad school, in Atlanta, at this time. WRAS, Georgia State University radio, was a new wave station that gave much air time to the Athens sound, this and many talented but lesser known groups as well.  What a great time musically to be there!
Can't stand R.E.M., but I do like this. 7.5     ;-)
What do they put in the water in Athens, GA?

They need to bottle and sell it!
Tasty!
Love a good dirge. Especially with Kate Pearson’s amazing harmonies.

REM was the first band I truly felt in love with. They still are one of my favorite bands ever.

Honestly it's harder to hate on this song than to just enjoy it, but what do I know
A (failed) try to keep I.R.S. years alive.
My advice to anyone who dislikes this song: turn it up!
Did I just wake up back in grad school? Would that it were so simple.

Stipe's whining gets on my nerves pretty quick (I've never been able to listen to an REM album straight through) but this song is just plain catchy. The rhythm is infectious and the slightly dissonant vocal harmonies are hard to forget.

This tune reminds me of a bagpipe type of drone almost.
But in a good way........with or without kilts.
Kate Pierson voice: equally cutting and comforting.

Not a fan of that Stipe's personality, but do enjoy a lot of REM tunes.

Overall, this song works for me.

Agree with the last bit.

If this was an unknown band, wouldn't the comments be all "monotonous, yawn, uninspired, drone, please don't play"...?

A much need bit of light in my day. Thank you.
Very simple song, but sooo sweet.

Old post, I know, but relevant.

The Bristol office cranks this up to a 10 today, too.

One of my favorite REM Songs.  It is on my powder skiing playlist.
One of absolute favorites from one of my absolute favorite bands! Thanks!

Not that it has 1 thing to do with this R.E.M. song but only because it's a cold, dreary Sunday afternoon and I was reading the tea box, not leaves, waiting for the kettle to boil while this song played, yes yes getting to the point here, but is R.E.M. the only American rock band to have ever successfully employed the oil/word "bergamot" in a song? Could be.
7 down to 5
Turn this shit UP!!!
Great song but Dead Letter Office is the real drunken masterpiece even with all the covers.
One of my favorite REM songs.

Hum underrated, i don't know, i remember they were Rolling stones  magazine favorite band for a long time !

Just makes me miss Reckoning.
Somewhat of the bland REM ilk. Bridge is encouraging...but slightly on the "eh" side.
{#Devil_pimp}zesty !
Not only this song, but the whole album is a gem!
that guitar riff is.. how is REM even a thing..
To me: 7 - Quite Likeable

I'll join you in that. "Classic rock" radio killed REM for me, so it's good to hear a captivating tune that wasn't murdered and borified by offputting ad finitum FM Twister repeats.

Love this collaboration. Too bad they didn't go back to the same well after this one.

Yep, love the transition from Lindsey Buckingham to Kate Pierson. THAT is thoughtful programming.
After I bought this CD way back, it lived for weeks in my CD-player!
Godlike indeed.
This is just an awesome tune. Begs the question of why Stipe didn't try and create a few more songs with a female counterpart.

Probably my fav REM song. They were way overplayed on FM radio and it drove me nuts, like they were the pop music messiah. Everybody Hurts Twister Losing My Religion. How about losing the repetitive noise? But this track I did not hear often enough. Good tune, and the lady backer really makes it work.

This was a great album - the glorious times before they started their later depressing dreary droning

Me, me, me, me...

Everybody all over the world leaped to their feet!  We be dancing!  LOVE THIS SONG!

Forty women in my mushrooming multitude of churches just said they love this song...  we be dancing licentiously...

This and Shiny Happy People...Kate, I love you...and The B52's...the people I work with don't know who these artists are...go figure!
