She calls me up and says baby it's a lonely ol' night
I don't know I'm just so scared and lonely all at the same time

Nobody told us it was gonna work out this way no, no, no, no, no
I guess they knew, we'd work it out in our own way

It's a lonely ol' night
Can I put my arms around you?
It's a lonely ol' night
Custom made for two lonely people like me and you

Radio playin' softly some singer's sang sad song
He's singin' about standing in the shadows of love I guess he feels awfully alone

She says I know exactly what he means yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
And it's a sad, sad, sad, sad feelin' when you're livin' on those in-betweens but it's okay

It's a lonely ol' night
Can I put my arms around you?
It's a lonely ol' night
Custom made for two lonely people like me and you

She calls me baby, she calls everybody baby
It's a lonely ol' night but ain't they all

It's a lonely ol' night
Can I put my arms around you?
It's a lonely ol' night
Custom made for two lonely people like me and you

It's a lonely ol' night
Can I put my arms around you?
It's a lonely ol' night
Custom made for two lonely people like me and you
Yeah, like me and you
Yeah, like me and you

Great song. Mellencamp is one of the most underrated American songwriters alive.

He was certainly grossly underrated in the UK where Bruce Springsteen filled his part of the market.

Yep, it still works.

Agreed. There is a lot of energy in this effort. I always wished the production had been a bit better.

if you haven't seen the movie, please do so now.

That movie ranks #1 on my list of the best
Yes he was way overplayed back in the day, but when all we had was radio all popular songs were. This song sounds incredible on the 192k Ogg feed. I have never heard this song sound so good. Bill you are always full of surprises, thanks for this one.

No movies. Just music.

Got pretty burned out on Mellencamp back in the day, but this song sounds great now!

We have those Midwest, farm country roots in common, so his songs have always held special meaning for me.

One of my all-time favorite lines:  An honest man's pillow is his peace of mind.
Lonnie Bannon: It's a lonely old night isn't it?
Hud Bannon: Ain't they all?

Crack sharp drumming on this tune, and a great song to hear live.
Is this being trotted out today for the 1st time?

Never really liked Mellencamp that much, but if I had to pick one album of his, this is the one I'd listen to.
