(translation from Middle High German)
Praised, praised be joy
praised be the time of May which brings joy
praised be the singing of birds
praised be the meadow, praised be the forest!
You can see a multitude of flowers spring out of
the green grass
more than I can imagine
The boys shall dance and jump in a competition
Praised, praised be joy
praised be the time of May which brings joy
praised be the singing of birds
praised be the meadow, praised be the forest!
Here's to you, you beauty of a woman!
Here's to you, you shall be praised for evermore
Here's to you, you can end the pain
if courtly love has wounded a yearning heart somewhere.
If your pink-colored mouth
was to smile lovingly
just like the rose starts blossoming because of dew.
The same joy can be given by the brightness of your sparkling eyes.
Praised, praised be joy
praised be the time of May which brings joy
praised be the singing of birds
praised be the meadow, praised be the forest!
Mistress, mistress, praised mistress,
Dearest, among women, you're the one I love
This has brought me only little benefit
Therefore, I don't want to sing about it anymore.
You think it is like a game
You are very tired of me
Which is why I find myself in pain.
My joy and your sight are locked away.
Praised...
Woe, woe betide courtly love!
Woe I want to call again and again.
So far I have been chained by it (literally 'her', referring to love)
and now 'she' gives me a painful release.
'She' has done me wrong.
'She' shall
hurt someone else's heart, feelings and mind.
I found out precisely that 'she' hurts oh so much.
Praised...
Blessed, blessed be the joy,
praised be the joyous May season,
praised be the singing of the birds,
praise be to the meadow, praise be to the forest!
You can see all kinds of flowers sprouting
from the green grass,
more than I can imagine.
Let the boys dance and jump in competition.
Blessed, blessed be the joy,
praised be the joyous May season,
praised be the singing of the birds,
praise be to the meadow, praise be to the forest!
Blessed are you, blessed are you, beauty of a woman!
Bless you, you shall be praised forever!
Bless you, you can end the pain,
when somewhere courtly love has wounded a longing heart.
Your rose-colored mouth,
if it would smile lovingly,
as the rose blossoms in the dew:
The same joy the gleam of your bright eyes can give.
Blessed, praised be the joy...
Mistress, mistress, praised mistress,
Dearest of hearts, you are dear to me of all women:
I have had little use of it:
Therefore I will sing of it no more.
It seems like a game to you.
You are very weary of me,
therefore I find myself in pain.
Joy and the sight of you are locked away from me.
Blessed, praised be the joy...
Woe, woe to the courtly love!
Woe is what I want to shout over her again and again.
Until now I was bound by her,
now she lets me free in a painful way.
She has acted badly towards me.
She shall wound someone else's
heart, feelings and mind.
I realized exactly that she hurts so much.
Blessed, praised be the joy...
Love this. That selig bit is very catchy. Pulls off the pretty acrobatic feat of harmonising the tonal world of a telephone call-waiting signal with something I'd expect from Hildegard von Bingen.
Almost. The lyrics are not from Hildegard von Bingen but from Gottfried von Neifen who lived about 100 years later.
They had me at "electro-medieval." Flashing back to the Gregorian chant remixes in the early 90s.
"Medieval-electronic" - ummm.
Not a criticism; just where my mind went as I sit here working -- and that soundtrack would be something to hear from on RP! Lots of great stuff there, and hopefully would not be seen [heard] as promoting a particular religious view.
(FWIW, personally I view it -- the entire biblical story -- as another branch of mythology, with some good lessons here and there; and the rock opera itself as a great, great story. Thank you, Tim Rice and ALW!)
All I can tell you is that she's using the nouns for loved ones, children or dogs.
Looks like "Schwiizerdüütsch"
I thought it was too! I was listening to it like, why can I half understand this...
Sorry, but I don't understand what Gottfried von Neifen and his contemporaries were talking round here 600 years ago.
But - by the way - such trip deep down memory lane always reminds me of the space of time atomic waste has to be kept safe: ONE. MILLION. YEARS. Good luck!
I have never in 10± years written a comment here on RP, but this has gotten me to grab my keyboard to say thanks Bill and Rebecca!
RP is the ONLY radiostation that has a satisfying catalouge of music. Bar none!
Thank you sooo much!
Not because I particularily like this song but because you appreciate it enough to be played and thus broaden my horizon once more...
Forgive me my grammar and other mistakes I may have made.

Hey Marc, Du hast sowas von recht! Ich höre RP seit mindestens 15 Jahren tagein tagaus, überall und immer und zahle per regelmäßiger Abbuchung. SENSATIONELLE ARBEIT von Bill & Rebecca!
Just scroll down. There is a translation. And current German speakers may have a hard time translating since the language is Middle High German.

But it is Middle High German

And I love that they can coexist in this space! Great job BillG
That's why I love RP.
It gets more beautiful every time I hear it.
