And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung
Would you hear my voice come through the music
Would you hold it near as it were your own?
It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken
Perhaps they're better left unsung
I don't know, don't really care
Let there be songs to fill the air
Ripple in still water
When there is no pebble tossed
Nor wind to blow
Reach out your hand if your cup be empty
If your cup is full may it be again
Let it be known there is a fountain
That was not made by the hands of men
There is a road, no simple highway
Between the dawn and the dark of night
And if you go no one may follow
That path is for your steps alone
Ripple in still water
When there is no pebble tossed
Nor wind to blow
You who choose to lead must follow
But if you fall, you fall alone
If you should stand, then who's to guide you
If I knew the way I would take you home
La da da da La da da da da
La da da La da La da da da
La da da da La da da da da
La da da da La da da da da
Oh - & thrn it up!
since the end is never told
we pay the teller off in gold
in hopes he will come back
but he can not be bought or sold...
I don't enjoy the Dead that much...except for this and a few other songs, which I think are brilliant. I luv this track. So I'm not cynical. Nor am I uneducated. So I mildly resent your generalization. I could say the same as you about a significant number of other musical artists I greatly admire, that thrill me. But I don't say that. Music is usually very subjective. Like I said, I'm no Dead fan -- overrrated -- but these and a number of other tracks are first rate. And stop calling me a cynic. A song like this makes me think and cry, and those are not the reactions of a cynic. That's bullshit.
i'm with you on your comments here.
Not in any way a Deadhead but this to me is an incredibly beautiful song. Jerry's vocals are so rich, soft and comforting here - like one's favorite blanket on a cold, winter evening.
My thoughts exactly. One of the greatest incredibly beautiful songs.
A beautiful song by a master poet and lyricist. RIP, Robert Hunter.
Rest in peace, Robert.
Made me go to the fridge for the Cherry Garcia I'd forgotten I had.... :-)
Bwahahahaha... Good one!

Great album ... road songs for migrant workers . Sing a longs
Pretty sure they're all listening to songs in Spanish and getting paid poverty wages these days.
I always felt that way until I went to live shows of the dead. No other experience like it.
The more ALW I hear over the years, the more "influences" I seem to perceive.
I clocked that as well... First performance 1 March 1968, this album dated 1970, so contemporaries. I sang it at school. Jerry would have been unlikely to hear it I would have thought. The similarity is mentioned in the Wikipedia article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Any_Dream_Will_Do_(song)
No Dead? No Force? No Joy?
Even with the gear reduction boxes, there's a limit to how much you can flog those
forty horses...;-(

Calm down people. Enjoy the music.
I'm sorry I don't like the same music you do (small mind). My loss!

- listen to
- sing along (both melody and harmony)
- think about
- play percussion to (on your desk or knees
- dance to (in the GD way, you know)
Cooooool.

Yeah baby.
I also like the GD although I'm not (or wasn't) a Dead Head....oh I wish I could have toured with the band back in the day....totally different life, eh?
As far as telling folks to "open up (their) small minds" well....that might not be the most persuasive argument style. And really, with an average rating of just under 8 with 2,000 ratings....this might be the highest rated GD tune. Besides, other than explaining why something is "10-Godlike vs 01-Sucko-Barfo" and maybe pointing out a few things about how the track was made, etc., I really don't think any of us can influence someone's taste/rating much more than a point.
This one's a 9-Outstanding to me. LONG LIVE RP and PEACE OUT
Never been to a live Dead show...do the gals all look like this?
Breath deep long enough and they do.
What a nasty person you are. Explains the state of the world.

I am not a Dead Head either. Their music just kind of annoys me. Don't want them dead but their music could just kind of go away.
PDS to the rescue.
WTF Man!
...and that your hate is mis-placed.
American Beauty is an unrecognized masterpiece.
Make it stop?
HA! How about...don't bogart that joint or pass the doobie

No, that would be Pink Floyd
The Dead got there name because they were grateful that their fans had ears that were dead.

Wow. This song is perfection. Gives me chills every time. You know when the stars are aligned, and the music and lyrics come together beyond gracefully... that's bliss.
Every time I hear this, I think of two dear friends who have left this earth. Rest in peace, John "Ernie" Beer and Earl "Willy" Doyle - you are both deeply missed.
^ Wow... I knew I had commented on this song at some point in the past, but didn't realize it was nearly TEN years ago. I still feel the same about it, and I still think of these friends every time I hear it.
RP has been a part of my life since 2002. FOURTEEN years. Thank you, Bill & Rebecca!
Jerry and Robert channeling Andrew Lloyd Webber!
And I'm not even a Dead fan . . .
So great.
You had to be there. One of the great songs of that time period.
No, that would be Pink Floyd
And I'm not even a Dead fan . . .
Yes, and yes it does. This song just always seems to be right on when ever its played.
8 to 9
Most bands today just scratch their heads in wonderment and just don't get it.
Ibid. I had to PSD it once it came on, as I could already sense the sing-along bit looming at the end.
Love this song.
