We are born in silence, there's nothing
Or no one to blame.
Soon we learn to fight, or die trying,
So my father said.
Said we can still be friends, that don't mean nothing
As it rushes to my head, my head.
You never loved, you'd just pretend, or something.
Darlin' you really should have said

Cause all I wanted was a little love.
All I needed was a little care.
All I wanted was a little love and tenderness yeah yeah.

I hear the siren blaze in the distance.
Her blood still on my hands,
But there's no way I would hide cause I loved her.
Surely you understand.
Your name is Geoffrey Drake, and you're under arrest he said
And led me down the road in chains, neighbors all turned their heads.
Goodbye Geoffrey Drake, a name they never will forget
As poison rushes through my veins, steals my final breath.

But all I wanted was a little love.
All I needed was a little care.
All I wanted was a little love and tenderness, yeah yeah yeah.

We all die in silence, there's nothing.
Only ourselves to blame.
Too much fight, no love gets you nowhere.
I wish my mother had stayed.

Cause all I wanted was a little love.
All I needed was a little care.
All I wanted was a little love and tenderness, yeah yeah yeah.

All I wanted was a little love.
All I wanted was a little care.
All I needed was a little love and tenderness, yeah yeah

I love the slide guitar in the background, very subtle but nice

I like it more after reading the lyrics.  It has meaning and tells a story, albeit a sad one.

He was just an excitable boy, they all said.

loveeeeeeeee this song.
Reminds of songs that told a story I used to hear as a child in the 70's. Love this song.
Whoa.

The lyrics are devastating, in a good way. We generally don't think about brutal murderers as needing a little love or about some of the things that cause people to become brutal like a mother leaving.
Most times, the people who are hardest to love are the ones who need it the most.

So True
Goodbye Geoffrey. I wish my mother would have stayed. Wow.

 Yes, I hear you.
But I find the lyrics tragic and penetrating, and the musical treatment so perfectly evocative!
"I wish my mother had stayed." Wow.

yes. yes. yes. i have a hard time figuring it out. did he witness his father beating/killing his mother and then avenge her? or was he wrongly accused of killing his mother while defending her? i can't figure it out. perplexed.

regardless, this song just kicks me in the gut every time. so beautiful.
I just moved this from a 7 to a 10.
It struck me today.  The words. The power. The voice.
Rare 10 for me.

Those soft drums rolls with the finger guitar.  So sweet.
Beautiful heartfelt song and passionate vocals
i'm googling and i can't find anything about Geoffrey Drake. can someone please private message me with a link about the story behind the song?
ohhhh!! i love this so much. takes me back to a sad time in my life, but...so good.
Drake had sentence commuted, was later released from prison to become motivational speaker and nuclear weapons handler for the DOD
Quite the storyteller!

It's pleasing to the ears - but have you read the lyrics? Beautiful they aren't, though really thoughtfully written
This is beautiful.

Holy crap, you're right, Ziggytrix!

I'm pretty sure this is not true. The song was written by the 2 members of Graffiti6, and it's not on the only album by The City.

Edit: I see the I'm not the only one to research this. Thanks, everybody.

I can't find anything that indicates Carole King wrote it.

Looks like a young Stephen Harper, before he entered politics. (the photo)

I'd love to. Where did you find The City version? Spotify, no. Youtube, no. Google, no. I'm lost.

I can't find it either.  All references point to this being a Graffiti6 original, written by James Needle and Tommy Danvers...

A link would be nice. This song isn't on The City's only album.

This song always gets me. Unlike many other songs, this tune's sombre tone matches the sadness of the lyrics.

I actually started liking it more after I read lyrics. Thanks for suggesting that.
I really like this song. great, depressing, lyrics.
I listened to a few other Graffiti6 songs and determined that I like them better than Maroon 5, Blink 182 and One Direction, but not as much as  Three Dog Night, The Four Tops or the Dave Clark Five.

Wow. Insensitive much?  What he's singing about is a sad plague in our society , on both the maternal and paternal fronts, that lead people to desperate and unfortunate demise.

Elton John's 'Ticking' comes to mind.

Psst!  On the left, slightly downward.
Last verse says it all...

just listening and had to stop see who this artist is that I've never heard of before performing a song that I've never heard of but really like.   A few minutes well spent away from work.  Love RP
What a talented artist!

Arrrgggg….damn it....me too...heck I was going to say it sounds like a modern Paul Simon song and those lyrics...well....not quite up to PS standards, eh?

I'll keep my 7 rating on it...and Long Live RP!!
Wow. That VOICE!
I liked this song a lot more before I read the lyrics.

I like it. Maybe not the most complex piece ever conceived, but certainly listenable with a nice groove.

Ho-wah-hah-mumble-drone-burble. TFFPSD
nice to hear one of my favorites here
The Moj liketh!
Simple and 'ear-catching', not sure about the slightly electro-pop drum - takes the edge off a bit for me
