The sun and the moon never change
They just rearrange
The night and the new day
Gold exchanges for silver
And the light on a river
Gets carried away

On and on, on and on
On and on, on and on

I lift up my head and I wonder
Just who it is calling
Calling my name now
I trip on my way and I blunder
My head falling under
A blanket of shame

On and on, on and on
On and on, on and on

High and low may I go
But God only knows
Just where I am going
High and low may I go
But God only knows
Just where I am going

The people around me won't let me
Become what I need to
They want me the same
I look at myself and I want to
Just cover my eyes and
Give myself a new name

The stones in the sky never worry
They don't have to hurry
They move in their own way
But I have to choose what to do
How to act, what to think
How to talk, what to say

On and on, on and on
On and on, on and on

On and on, on and on
On and on, on and on
On and on, on and on
On and on, on and on

Strange effect though. First impression was: like a female chracter from Dickens novel.
I wonder what would happen if Jack White would team up with Jack Black?
Black and White, maybe?
Jack White has a place all of his own in the history of music. It doesn't matter who his inspirations were, because he makes all that just a footnote in the record of his work.
Anyone that can build a functional guitar inside half an hour and play good music on it immediately deserves a pedestal all of their own.
Any relationship between him and Jack Black?
Jack White's shit goes on and on
....... and on and on........
Ah! Thank you kindly. It had been a while since I last heard that.
Feel free to criticise JW to your heart's content. I really like most of his tunes.
Yawn and yawn
Yawn and yawn and yawn...
Disappointed he didn't go full ZZ Top during that bridge.  The song should go into a couple of stanzas of "Party On The Patio".

Your comment has made me finally clue in to the fact that he is not wearing a Victorian lady's bonnet. I honestly thought it was some sort of goth, gender-bendy old timey thing he was going for with that image

That's what I saw too! I much prefer the idea of a bonnet.
Not a fan, never really been one but this isn't a bad song at all.

Yikes! It's not obvious on the RP album cover image, but you're right if you look close. Gives it quite a different feeling!

Ideally, you should be seeing your optometrist at least yearly. Just mention next time you have an exam.
Who knows, the doc may just be a Jack White fan!

Hmm. I'm going to disagree. I'm not a huge Jack White fan—too much of the White Stripes output is unlistenable—, but I'm continually impressed with his ability to absorb a vast range of musical influences and turn them into something original. He's compared to a lot of other artists because you can hear their influences in his work. His groundbreaking work with The Raconteurs and this album would seem to indicate a mature artist who is in the process of turning the page.

Is 'On And On And On' a reference to the Einaudi piece that preceded this...? ;-)
Interesting tune.  I don't know if I like it or not.
Seems like he is about to cry
Jack White does rock! Yes!! I like the words too. A song about free will 😀

I agree as to his talent... It's the nasally singing that turns me off.

Although Jack White (white stripes) has a different voice then Jerry Garcia (Grateful Dead) I can hear the similarities with the high tone of both of them in this song. This is a great track.{#Bananajam}

The "new Beck" sounds like everyone else. Nothing original at all.
I think it takes a while for us mere mortals to understand Jack's vibe. This one is growing on me slowly. I like it more and more, with each listen!

Looking forward to seeing him live at Forecastle Festival this July.
not so familiar with Jack White when I should have been, as it was music from my late teens early 20s I think re: White Stripes), but glad to have discovered him as an almost 50 yr old adult - such a talented musician
Most excellent. Dig the slide guitar in there especially.

I don't always listen to Jack White, but when I do.....
Being not familiar with Jack's music or the White Stripes, when I first heard this song today, my first reaction was that is was a song I had heard somewhere before, and I thought it was an old Grateful Dead tune I had heard years ago. Surprise. But it's good stuff. Don't understand why some people that comment seem negative. Good music is good music, even if it's not always my favorite. Peace and joy my brothers and sisters.
I like Jack White.  Whether or not I like a particular song, he/Raconteurs/White Stripes/Dead Weather always make me stop and check who it is- because I like what I hear.  Of course, that is IMHO.
ahh Stingray, back once again to underscore his role as the troll you love to hate. . .

OK, Paps! I understand the words "shitty music" falls into your "no-class" category!

Translation: Take it easy, Paps!

Jack started out as a nice guy,

meanwhile he turned into an arrogant red-carpet loving asshole!

So disappointing!

The song...? Boring and not worth discussing why it is!

OVERRATED - the Jack White industry!

I understand that although she shared her bonnet with him, Florence Nightingale had a deeper voice than our Jack.
Boy does this song go on and on and on. 3

Dead-on analysis.

@ Wonder Lizzy

Maybe because "Hanging around" of the STRANGLERS is one of my all-time favourites? Does that count for a reason?

Of course I hang around - simply because RP is the best radio-option, possibly the best music-option, "Thin Wonder Lizzy".

@ westslope

OK, Paps - but tell me, what exactly you're complaining about, before you take your belt. What language is it - seriously!! - I have to watch out for?

Is it the word "shit*y" (see how quick I am able to learn?) that you despise? For me "global-warming", "war-on-Iran", "investment-banksters",  "embargo-on-Cuba" and "Pink Floyd" are bad words.

Class...? Trust me - I'm full of it!

Totally confused by the Jack White flames. This guys is always interesting at worst and a great listen when full on. I wish we could see more Racontuers.

It's not a bonnet. It's a vulture on his shoulder. Look more closely.

McCartney-esque.
Sounds like wharf rat from the  Grateful dead

Very Grateful Dead, similar to Ryan Adam's efforts
Really nice...
there's some Nick Drake here somewhere - understated greatness - he needs to release an album every 6 months
I like what you're doing here, Bill...nice set.

Seeing some interviews with him I get the impression he is willing to try anything musically to see if it would work or not.  Most times it does to certain extent.

I really like some of his stuff other bits not so much but I do appreciate the talent.

I do like what I heard off this album.

Looks like the stint with The Raconteurs did his songwriting some good.

I thought the same , closer inspection reveals a vulture like bird sitting on his shoulder.

he must be one of the most prolific song writers/performers out there right now. wonderful talent!

I've heard a couple of tracks from this album. It sounds really promising. I can't believe his range.
