Balancing on
One wounded wing
Circling the edge
Of the neverending
The best of the vanished marvels have gathered inside your door

More than begin
But less than forget
But spirits born
From the not happened yet
Gathering there
To pay off a debt brought back from the wars

We thought we lost you
We thought we lost you
We thought we lost you
Welcome back

Sleeping for years
Pick through what is left
Through the pieces that fell and rose from the depth
From the rainwater well
Deep as a secret nobody knows

Less than forget
But more than begun
These adventures in solitude never done
To the names of our wounds
We send the same blood back from the wars

We thought we lost you
We thought we lost you
We thought we lost you
It will all come back

I know you want to
Work for
Wait for
Want more
And that it's comin' at a bad time
Some cold place
Heartless ways
For all we know

I know you need to
Breathe through
Come back
Come to
But it's comin' at a bad time
Some lost heart
Tangled day
For all we know

I know you want to
Work for
Wait for
Want more
And that's comin' at a bad time
Some cold race
Heartless ways
For all we know

I know you want to
Breathe through
Come back
Come too
But it's comin' at a bad time
Old scarred face
Survivor's guilt
For all we know

Decent; but I really would never choose this over thousands of other songs that are "out there."
Maybe it is the time of year but this song without fail makes me think of Remembrance Day or, (for the US of A) Veteran's Day.  All those people who came back wounded in body and spirit.  Don't know if that's what the musicians intended but that's where it takes me.

Like this quite a lot!
I like the call and response in harmony, that is a very clever musical construction! I like it very much!

love spirit great album quarantine valid
I would be really sad if Neko Case ever stopped collaborating with The New Pornographers.
Quarantined to my room, where every human movement occurs to me as a nuisance and severe fatigue weights on me, this verse brought me a smile.

We thought we lost you,
We thought we lost you,
We thought we lost you,
Welcome back

according to Amazon.com, this is Kathryn Calder on lead vocal (with AC Newman). Didn't know they where splitting vocals with Neko.

I keep forgetting somehow how good of an album this is.

I need to explore other NP albums to see if they are as good.  Anyone have any suggestions about which one to check out next?

this is sooo good for the ears !! :-))
nice version
I love this band but not this song.  A 6

Bill used to play this song every day...it even seemed like more than once a day. Egad!

Thank you Bill for easing off this song. I still don't like it, but I can handle hearing it every few months....

Delicate, lovely. AC Newman is one of the best pop songwriters out there for my money. There are some real gems on his new solo cd, too - GET GUILTY.
The cover of the CD has kept me away - but on my "must buy" list now
I like this.
This song charms me.

This has started to sound like a Second City sketch.  And considering that it isn't a Second City sketch, that's a bad thing.

Thanks for ruining a great song/band by overplaying it!
This one's still good, I like it, it's a sweet-sounding song with a nice intro. The other one's from this band are a bit overplayed though..
please get lost? The long annoying intro is not worth the modest payoff

So very, very true. I think that RP has really turned me off of this band - or at least this album, which I don't think I'll ever buy now.

NO a dumb-ass televangelist said that rock music was the new pornography. With that said, would you please send some money so I can pray for you, save your soul and so I can get a new hair piece.

Me? I'm going the other direction. I started off liking it, but am seriously considering hitting mute, or just leaving work early. Maybe that's the best idea.
I find this more haunting and poignant with each listen. the entire album is good.

The song's OK, but worth the Neko payoff at the end.
Always sounded like a tv theme song or commercial jingle to me.
This tune loses me
They are performing at an outdoor concert in Mpls, Mn on June 21 at the Walker Art Center Sculpture Garden. I heard this band for the first time after the first of the year. Now I am hooked. A co-worker says there have been various people rotating through the band over the last several albums. But he has listened to them for 3-4 years and rates all their albums highly. So I have tickets on the 21rst of June to see for myself.

I agree. I generally like the NP, but this track is weak.
I really like this band but this is certainly not one of their better songs.
Love this song. Gives me goosebumps every time.

This is funny. First time I've heard this and after about 20 seconds I was ready to rate it a 2 or 3. After listening for a minute more, I'm thinking that I definitely need to look into this band more. Like the song!
Like candy. The too sweet kind.
This one sounds quite nice :D

I heard these guys on RP a month or so ago and now I'm a hopeless NP addict. I love the fact that a song can mix male and female vocals and not be a pithy love song. All their stuff is great, and then there's "The Laws Have Changed," which is more than sublime. And of course I learned about them the month AFTER they came to Denver...

Yep, Jimmy Swaggert it was, he who apparently had his own weaknesses being busted for soliciting hookers twice.
What ever happened to the Old Pornographers?

Man that's snarky. Why didn't I come up with that one?
This song has really grown on me. I just love it, I love the back and forth play and harmonizing between the female and male vocals. It really gets under your skin, in a good way. It hits an emotional chord in me.
I really hate this song I'm so tired of the octave jump that is so popular now like someone squeezing his nads to help him hit the high ones

Sweet! I've taken some notes here, and will certainly thank you in my Grammy acceptance speech.
The BareNaked Ladies were nobodies until an official in the Toronto City council banned them from performing because of the name of the band it was the best marketing they could have ever recieved

I disagree. By the power of his magic chest hair The New Pornographers can channel the artistic mind of Mercury. It is clearly obvious by the cover art.
ad4tise wrote:

On Wikipedia it states that the name came from a Japanese film called "The Pornographers". And why would it be suicide? Perhaps only the most militant, close-minded, anti-pornography, moralistic person would refuse to even listen to music from a band with "pornographers" in the name, but come on now..... luckily that's only but a wee portion of the population, so "professional suicide" seems a bit strong.

Shoot me, but I liked that song. The vocals had nice harmonies and were fresh and unique. I really enjoyed it. Had a little Sufjan Stevens to it (who I also like!).
The two vocals go very well together.

Saw them Monday night at a cozy venue in Denver. Neko was present, what an incredible voice - Kathryn Calder is no slouch either. What a great show. BTW, the group's name was derived from the Most Reverend Jimmy Swaggert's mid 90's proclamation that "rock music is the new pornography." This quote was uttered of course after being busted not once but twice for trysts with hookers. And the flock still tithes...
This blows.
Like the band but this song is blaa.
