One day you see a strange little girl look at you
One day you see a strange little girl feeling blue

She'd run to the town one day
Leaving home and the country fair
Just beware
When you're there
Strange little girl

She didn't know how to live in a town that was rough
It didn't take long before she knew she'd had enough
Walking home in her wrapped up world
She survived but she's feeling old
And she found all things cold

Strange little girl
Where are you going?
Strange little girl
Where are you going?
Do you know where you could be going?

Walking home in her wrapped up world
She survived but she's feeling old
'Cause she found all things cold

Strange little girl
Where are you going?
Strange little girl
Where are you going?
Do you know where you could be going?

Strange little girl

Where are you going?
Do you know where you could be going?

Love this band.  Truly one of a kind.  Skin Deep is epic, gives me chills.
Strange πŸ€” little girl πŸ‘§πŸ» 🀨 ?!
Not my fav Strangera. But want more of this band
The Stranglers are certainly a band that can take one on an interesting musical journey.  It's a quite fun listen to follow their discography.
good lord - I live Tori but the stranglers did this 20 years before she covered it… I am old
Love the Tori Amos cover of this too!
Stranglers -- Ahead of their time and under-appreciated.
Bowie-esque.   Is that a word?  It should be.

Me too.  If nothing else, that covers record put the Stranglers on my radar. I've come to appreciate them over the years.
I always thought this was a Tori Amos original...had NO IDEA! And The Stranglers I know are a lot harder than this! (I'm thinking Rattus Norvegicus - Peaches!)

Much respect to The Stranglers!
Agree with some of the comments here about how great their catalogue is - definitely prefer their early stuff (No More Heroes, Get A Grip On Yourself, Something Better Change, Peaches, Bear Cage - and of course Waltzinblack 😁) but still, this is good πŸ‘
Man, these guys produced some pretty great music...always happy to hear them...

People who only know the Stranglers songs on the RP-playlist must think they are a soft pop band. I would like to hear some of their early work.

anything by the Stranglers gets an automatic 8, with the option to upgrade in the future...

I appreciate the view into another person' perspective on something as profound s this.
Rattus Norvegicus casette opened my ears to this band so many years back!

I too am more familiar with Tori's cover than the Strangler's version which I am hearing for the first time here on RP. Have to say I like both...

One of my all time fav songs.   A shame they didn't play it when I saw them live a few years back.  Im still a firm fan thou and GB was my first single.

That's because Hugh Cornwell went solo and he plays this in his own gigs (presumably because he wrote it) with his son and daughter also in the band.

Saw him play this when he opened for Blondie a few years back.

I used to like this song mostly for the hook, but this time I realized that the rest of the song is actually the best, most beautiful part.
Not their best work I must say. Solid 8 though.

The Japanese have an amazing knack for turning a minor pleasure into an extreme fetish...
I love this song every time I hear it. So many memories (fond ones) associated with this version.

I have to admit, I like Tori's version as well...but a very different vibe.

And Golden Brown...LOVE THAT SONG.

Good stuff...this is TGIF music for me.

Thanks, Bill!

Agreed! With Robert Plant singing in a proper British voice, rather than in that weird mid-Atlantic drawl he championed with Led Zepp

They had their share of mellow tunes, especially by the early 1980's.  It would be nice to hear "No Mercy" as well.

i was gettin something outta the fridge, and for a minute i thought this was some robert plant solo stuff i'd never heard before

Do so, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. The guitars are pretty ferocious, great energy. I heard Tori's version first and this seems slow and tame to me in comparison.
This version is how it is suppose to be. Tori= Can not and did not make it better.

Under-appreciated implies that there's merit here that was missed by most...
Ah, The Stranglers... never get enough of The Stranglers!
Hey! Didn't Tommy Bolin do this tune also?
hey thanks, i've never heard any version other than Tori's cover!
wow, my personal collection ad RP are becoming indistinguishable.
IMO: Tori's version kicks the crap out of this one. But , this IS the first time I've heard the original... Hers just has more drive and ferocity behind it.

Must not have listened to much of Tori's stuff if you feel this way.
I bet he has. I've noticed that a lot of males are unable to appreciate Tori and I count myself in that band of brothers... not being sexist here, I'm a fan of nummerous female artists but Tori just doesn't register with a lot of guys... they hear this annoying tinkling and creepy voice and nothing else. This is a great song and I haven't heard Tori's version but I'll go look for it so I can be more open minded... I want to see if she can do something that doesn't bug me.

He was dead by the time the Stranglers were going. He was great, just spent four hours cleaning the garage and jamming Tommy Bolin's boxed set.

I had never heard the original before, so I agree. I'm sure if I had heard this one first, I would like it better... We fear change.
now i have someone else to blame for this song

Consider, if you will, that Led Zep was formed in 1968 and the Stranglers in 1974. Not exactly worlds apart. To your point, yep, Bob's all over this one. But I like this one better.
Beastie wrote:

Couldn't quite hear this song because I was a bit away from the speakers, but when I got to my computer I wanted to look up the name of this "Robert Plant" song, thinking it must be off the new album... only to find it's the Stranglers!
Beastie wrote:

I thought the same at first... then it sortta morphed into some Bowie / Robyn Hitchcock blend... then sortta faded into, well, crap.
Golden Brown is an amazing song! timeless IMHO... what can I say, I love the album Feline

works for me, in a simplistic high school pop sort of way much better than the tori amos attempt
