From the Wikipedia:

Sodade (Saudade) is a Portuguese word that doesn't have a direct translation into English: It describes a deep emotional state of nostalgic or profound melancholic longing for an absent something or someone that one loves. Moreover, it often carries a repressed knowledge that the object of longing may never return.  A stronger form of saudade may be felt towards people and things whose whereabouts are unknown, such as a lost lover, or a family member who has gone missing, moved away, separated, or died.

I wish I could have seen Cesaria perform, that would have been a real treat.

i feel all that. thanks for putting it here. gorgeous song.
Now I understand the leap from St. Nicolas to Santa Claus
This feels a bit faster than the Video I've watched
Or me brain is futzed (hey, you in the back, no snark!)
And today's Worldle was: CAPE VERDE.  Coincidence?
Such a beautiful song which brings images of São Tomé❤️

Yes, well, she's from Cape Verde (a Portuguese "overseas department" until 1975). However:
"What exactly is morna, the musical form she has made her own? A Cape Verdean ballad, usually expressing nostalgia, which goes at a languid pace: a Lusophone answer to the American blues. It's often compared to Portuguese fado, but the two have little in common apart from their dark harmonies and use of the delicately expressive 12-stringed Portuguese guitar. Where fadistas belt out their laments in tightly structured bursts of feeling, the morna singer tends to meander. And nothing's more mournful than morna."

Oh my heavens. What is the tempo? It transports.
Gorgeous voice. Gorgeous song.
what a great language.  What a great song. Viva portuguese!!!
Ohhh!!! Cesária!!!!
This reminds me that perhaps we need a bit of Portuguese fado on RP.
Saw her in 90' in Paris. It was great and so sweat. RIP Cesaria

“Call me up next time!” Unfortunately she died in 2011 due to respiratory failure. She was smoking on stage in Berkeley, strictly forbidden but of course no one cared. Such a lovely voice. Died at age 70

Sublime as everything by Evora.

What utter crap to say that this is "American-centric and racist". The OP was simply stating that he liked the B V S C. 🐨

The sound of Cabo Verde - great surf, cool people, fantastic tunes....

Donald Trump and Cesaria Evora should not be in the same sentence. I agree with your sentiment about the previous poster, though.
I think this is absolutely beautiful.  Thanks RP!

you need an enema .... that's enema, not Enya by the way
Much different version from what I know, I think
As for me, this cannot be played too often. Gliding the spectrum of emotions. One of the most soulful voices gifted to us. Cesaria's spirit lives strong.

Definitely echoed here. Yup. After 14 years of enjoying the immense privilege of being an RP listener, I am making my first comment. This will be an excellent forum in which I might learn to practise great restraint at times. Or not. Right now, I am restraining myself from giving some very  strong recommendations for therapy, to help someone perhaps start to connect with emotions....

You must not spend much time online.  At the very least, I see no moral lines crossed here.

Damn! That is some word! Thanks for digging up the definition. I think this song is great. I'm a real sucker for songs in Portuguese.
This is particularly relevant right now. Stay safe, everyone.
J'ai vu Cesaria en concert à Paris en 1992 ou 1993. C'était magnifique et d'une pure poésie. Le temps s'était arrêté et elle nous emmenait loin, loin, loin
Merci cesaria
Simply beautiful ❤️

if u like this track... find the Artist STROMAE on Youtube... who does a rendition of this song, and I think he knew her.  Cheers!
{#Notworthy}
She is wonderful! She was in Moscow with concert.
It's good...and really does make the whole "nostalgic longing" thing resonate for me. I love it here, but I do miss each and every thing I've loved, all over the world, and I miss each and every one of my adventures. It hurts my heart how much I miss the 20 years of life abroad I led. I miss places and things that once seemed such an integral part of the Boulder experience that disappeared during that 10-year stretch I was in Tokyo, 2002-'12. Saudade is a very real vibration, and this song makes me feel how much I'm steeped in it...
thanks for the info/enlightenment. It adds to my understanding and enjoyment of this song.  {#Smile}ShoePuke wrote:

I always assumed someone at the record company? made a mistake with the word saudade. But it turns out it's the spelling they use in Cape Verdean Creole, according to wiki.

Like this song... Rated it a -9- at first hearing...still there for me.

Went to Amazon and bought all he music... Uneven, but some more good music...

Gets the feet dancing in the sand and a need for cold beer in hand to keep my balance... Must have two...You never taste the first one.

Beach music... If you don't like it just head for the airport, pick nice friendly airline and buy a ticket on next flight out.Tell airlines "Beach, warm sand, palm trees, women wearing almost nothing, nice warm water ..."   When you get there tell em " A-J sent me"...

You decide if/when you're coming back...

There are a lot of annoying songs around, this is not one of them. You are entitled to your opinion of course but I think you are utterly wrong, please Bill keep this song for the rest of us to enjoy.

I have always enjoyed this song and its thanks to Radio Paradise for introducing me to Cesaria Evora.
Sad to hear that she's no longer with us but we have the legacy of her music for evermore.
1st time I heard this song was by Bonga from his Bonga 74 album, back in 1975ish.  You can see Bonga and Cesaria traveled and performed the song together many times.  He acquiesced to her version as well. She came to the States and sold out concerts.  My Mom and Dad were fortunate enough to see her 06ish(?) in Bean Town (Boston).  Tickets were tough to come by.
I prefer the Bonga version, myself.  Probably 'cause I heard that one first and was accustomed to it.  You'll notice in his version he sings "este nha terra de Cabo Verde" as opposed to Sao Nic'lau.  I believe Sao Nic'lau is probably the way the composer wrote it.  Since the composer was born there.  (According to Wiki).
Beyond amazing.....
The base of music: Expression of the soul feelings.

I love writing in coffeehouses - especially with exotic music playing.

Interesting, "the coffee house novelist...."
Do you type or scribble?

{#Drummer} More please
The volume goes up a notch or two the moment I hear her haunting voice.  Simply lovely,...in any language.

So beautiful. "Saudade," to me, means the final, and permanent, stage of mourning. It is the fragile, sweet cast of hollowness that we refuse to let go for those things that pass that we never want to go. It is an intimate, human desire to preserve and make whole for ourselves a world that is constantly changing. This song reminds me of this feeling. It is beyond language. So is the singer.

Exactly.

Really like this song.  I don't speak any Portuguese at all, so I have always paraphrased the chorus as "there's nothing like a meatloaf".
Did not know she had passed ... nos temos saudades de voce linda cantora! {#Sad}
