The album release is 77, not 97 as Tosh was murdered in 87. The comments of late here on this song have veered waaaaaay past the song into politricks territory.
Sinead's cover is great, and while I like Tosh's OG version; the lyrics being so very relevant today, it's not my favorite track of his. Stepping Razor and African, on this album as well as Equal Rights are top notch tracks.

And to say that a government is not a dictatorship but just authoritarian, is kind of missing the point that also neither is a truly functioning democracy. Sure, that's not *exactly* a dictatorship, and not *exactly* accurate, either. But it's not exactly democracy as it's supposed to work -- and does work -- elsewhere. Today, while driving my 82 year old Mom around on errands, we had to get to South Presa. A South Texas regional band, Los Number 3 Dinners did a version of "South Presa Man" as a riff on this. An old street downtrodden with time. We laughed as I reggaed a few refrains.

THANKFULLY we don't have the Goldfinger cover....and I wouldn't be surprised if Miley Cyrus did it too. One of the variants might be "Sinner Man" by Nina Simone (and others maybe too....?)
As a general rule, anyone that wants a song played less/removed from RP, etc., I think should have a replacement track in mind.

I'd second that. This is a fine song with fine lyrics, but you really need to express the anger of the oppressed against the Downpressor Man to really make it stir the blood, which is surely what it's for. 7 from the Nottingham jury for the original, 9 for yer woman O'Connor's version.

Nina Simone's is called "Sinnerman", otherwise the words are the same. I like her use of piano so that there's tension, a sense of all those consequences closing in on the bad guy. (Oh, I dont think Nina included the flea verse or the run and hide verse)
I really like Nina's version of Strange Fruit. Her unique voice adds to the haunting emotion of that song's subject matter.
I've gotten used to the version by that crazy baldhead: wishful Sinful O'Connor.
This rocks. Good anthem for current times. Sinead does it justice too in her cover of it! but the integrity was already there in the lyrics. Very cool heartfelt track.

sorry I missed this song. It is a very powerful song most of us, including myself, are not able to personally relate to. Peter stood up for what he believed in. This is one of, if not the best reggae albums of all time. Equal Rights, Downpressor Man, Stepping Razor, and Aparthied are four of the most intense songs you could hear on the same album. If you have one reggae cd in your collection-EQUAL RIGHTS should be the cd.
Never been a big reggae fan, but Peter Tosh has a permanent place in my music library... I prefer him to Marley. And Sinead, well, nice try.
I'm sorry I missed hearing this. I've never heard it, and I'm curious to hear how it compares with the version by Sinead. Judging by the feedback, it looks like hers is better. Can't wait to hear for myself someday.
