Don't, you mess,
With a little girl's dream.
'Cause she's liable to grow up,
Mean.

Surprise you to find that I'm laughing?
You thought that you'd find me in tears.
You thought I'd be crawling,
The walls like a tiny mosquito,
And trembling in fear.

Well, you may be king for the moment,
But I am a queen understand,
And I've got your pawns and your bishops and,
Castles,
All inside the palm of my hand.

While you were looking the other way,
While you had your eyes closed.
While you were licking your lips,
'Cause I was miserable.
While you were selling your soul.
While you were tearing a hole,
In me.
I was taking control.
Now I have taken control. (I have... control...)
Now I have taken control. (I have... control...)
Now I have taken control.
Control...

This is beginning to feel good,
Watching you squirm in your shoes,
A small bead of sweat on your brow,
And a growl in your belly,
You're scared to let through.
You thought you could keep me from loving,
You thought you could feed on my soul.
But while you were busy destroying my life,
What was half in me has become whole.

While you were looking the other way.
While you had your eyes closed.
While you were licking your lips,
'Cause I was miserable.
While you were selling your soul.
While you were tearing a hole,
In me.
I was taking control
Now I have taken control. (I have... control...)
Now I have taken control. (I have... control...)
Now I have taken control.
Control...

So this is how it feels,
To breathe in the summer air.
To feel the sand between my toes,
And love inside my ear.

All those things, you taught me to fear,
I've got them in my garden now and,
You're not welcome here.

Come here.

Come a little bit closer...
Let me look at you.
I gave you the benefit of the doubt it's true,
But keep in mind my darling,
Not every saint is a fool!

(Don't)
While you were looking the other way, (you mess)
While you had your eyes closed. (with me)
While you were licking your lips,
'Cause I was miserable.
(Don't)
While you were selling your soul (you mess)
While you were tearing a hole,
In me.
(I was taking control)
Now I have taken control. (I was taking control)
Now I have taken control. (control)
Control...
(Control)
Control...
Don't you mess with me.

''(Spoken)''
This cannot be all that there is to life,
Because, in our confrontation, with,
An enormous and cold, universe.
There is something comical, to the idea
That we can really enforce our will, on humanity.
Power, corrupts.

It's your world, do with it what you want!
No, that's not the way to do it.
Power...That's not the way to do it.
Paradox
No
It's your world
No
It's your world
No
It's your world
NO!

Control it! Control it!

(This is scaring me...

I live at the end of a 5 and 1/2 minute hallway
I live at the end of a 5 and 1/2 minute hallway)

At the end of it all lies of course the final phenomenon of deterioration
Entropy
Which is a predictable deterioration when the creative energy ceases...

Same here. Thought it was a new Garbage Song.
Hey small minded comparison makers… Just listen and stop the monkey in your fucking head for a minute. Honestly stop posting stupid opinions - I am just tired of this one sentence bullshit. This is a great woman songwriter - she fucking rocks!
Sounds overproduced to my ears... sounds "Marvel". I would be happy to hear a more "confidential" version of this great song, in which Poe doesn't sound like a super hero.
I get all the comparisons - but it stands on its own for me as a great song. Enjoying it very much
Sounds a lot like Garbage to me!
Like a female NIN. Awesome.
I've noticed that the release date is being updated to year, month and sometimes day. It seems this updated broke the link between comments and playlist. I see the green heart in the playlist saying I've rated this song, but not in the comments. I guess I have to rate again?

NOPE
Does this sound like Chrissie Hynde to anyone?

I still tell people that.
Why is this the only album of Poe that is played on RP? Like for real.

Yep -- maybe Garbage too.
Love this girls voice.
I'm hearing shades of Chrissie Hynde in this.

Still a great piece of music. Always worth listening!
Her voice is amazing!
Like Pavlov's Dog, I leapt for the comment button when I heard her angelic voice.

She takes control.
19 years and still kickin’!

Now I will too!  Nice description.
Much of her album Haunted ties in with her brother Mark Z. Danielweski's brilliant novel House of Leaves.
I can only imagine the sonic landscapes she would have kept creating had she not been so royally and completely screwed by her record company. So sad :(
Sure wish she'd record solo again!

True that. This concept album beautifylly escorts the listener through some deep, dank and damn impressive sonic poetry.
Best. Album. Ever.

(Mic drop)
Poe, please call, our children miss you!

This album comes out swinging; the first three tracks blend together as a great set.
Just love this whole album.
Funny how she sounds a bit like Curve here. I like both, so that's all good :)
I tell people it's as creative as Kate Bush, but as ballsy as Chrissie Hynde.
How about some John Coltrane Bill, listening to this makes me want less sugar, Garbage and unfulfilled women
Can never hear enough Poe on RP. Or all the other fem vocal selects we get here.

Yes a bit Garbage, Tori Amos and Aimee Mann.  Nice groove!

I don't know much about history and entropy
And, if I'd  be the one next time around.

I bought this CD the week it came out in stores in 2000. First time I ever heard Poe, it was "Trigger Happy Jack", and I've been hooked ever since! Guess for now I'll have to hear her sing with Conjure One....
Reminds a bit of Garbage. It's great!
Stunningly brilliant record. Wish she could've made more. Flawless front to back.
Poe! Yeah! {#Bananajam}
Brilliant. {#Bananapiano}
Never heard this before. Striking and catchy.
Creepy cool.
First time hearing this track.  Nice.  {#Cheers}
Could be Garbage...

All true, but still a good tune.
I don't hear Laurie Anderson in this.

Looks like there's only one Laurie Anderson song on RP. {#Cry} Let X=X

I thought I would hold onto my remarks but it looks like I headed right to the same place again......There,  Now please leave it on this time...{#Doh}
The first 30 seconds sounded just like Laurie Anderson....really like this tune.
God, she's good.
Great set Bill. Beck--> Poe--> Porcupine Tree.

(While I have your attention, please fix the Wiki link. It takes us to the Edgar Allan variety rather than the Anne Danielewski variety, which is here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poe_(singer))
Miss me some Poe. POE! WHERE ARE YOU?!

Man, I wish I could give this a 15.
She wants control?  Why, yes ma'am; I am at your service ... just keep singing.
I agree. This is a must have, must keep album. Were I ever to lose it I would have to immediately find it again. This whole album helped me deal with the loss of my mother. I can't begin to explain it but... it spoke volumes to me at the time.

Unique rockin' sound. I'll buy it.
This album is amazing, start to finish. Flawless. Love Poe! Helps me get into "feisty chick" mode, which is always fun. :)

Her last album was so intense that I expect it took a hell of a lot out of her, emotionially, so I wouldn't hold my breath for the next one, though like you I surely look forward to it. Hey, Poe, you can take me for a ride anyday {#Hearteyes}

I'm afraid of Poe, but I like her anyway.

My hope is that she has been secretly recording material for the last decade while she waits out the record company contract from hell.

This album is in my top 10 "unearthed gems" list.  Few people I know have heard of Poe, but when I let the interested among them borrow this CD, they are impressed.  The songwriting and performance are excellent and the production is highly innovative.  What a waste that someone like Alanis Morissette experienced a level of popularity that could have (I'll say it: should have) been reserved for Poe and Tracy Bonham.

She REALLY needs to make a new album yesterday. The music biz needs more like her, these two albums are not nearly enough.

This entire record is awesome. LOVE it.
Wow.  Intense lyrics.  I'll have to send them to my ex-wife.  bwahahaha

Holy cow, I can't believe it's been 10 years since this came out. I still love it. Really wish she'd get that record company thing sorted.
I like this CD. She sounds like she is channeling Joni Mitchell a bit a the beginning of this song.....{#Music}

A friend of mine bought me this CD for my birthday — I've come to think it was an excellent gift!

Nice... Very nice
Such a powerful voice.

That's the voice of Poe's late father, for whom Poe produced this CD, which is thus highly moving. Had me blubbing at the end and I very rarely cry.

Poe?

Looks like she's appearing with Donovan in LA on Friday (3/19).

Poe will perform at the David Lynch Foundation Presents: Donovan & Friends

March 19, 2010 at 7:30pm – El Rey Theater Legendary folk-rock-pop troubadour DONOVAN (Mellow Yellow, Sunshine Superman, Epistle to Dippy, There is a Mountain, Wear Your Love Like Heaven, Hurdy Gurdy Man, etc.) isl headlining a benefit concert. Organized by David Lynch Foundation

Love this song, and pretty much everything she does. When can we have NEW Poe? Awesome.
Yeah! Great GET OUT OF MY LIFE song.

The more of her stuff I hear, the more i like it. Thanks, Bill.
Great big sound, big voice, and a very interesting and ironic quote at the end. Ms Poe has gained another fan based on what I've heard on RP in recent months. 9 from the Nottingham jury.
Poe rockin'!  I can dig it!

LOVE the music she makes, LOVE the eyes in the photo below, WOW is that really her?  What an interesting set of feline portals! and it would figure, (and I mean that in a very very good way) because 1) cats are the supreme beings of contemplation and present a pure wedding of physicality and grace melded with sculpted muscles and agile minds, and 2) the eyes are the windows of the soul, as the ancient Greeks said...
