I guess you got to feel seemingly simple music like the Blues and maybe know some of its history, to appreciate it.

Like in all genres there's indeed a lot of generic blues, but John Lee Hooker could move me, with just a few words and one chord, in a song that seemed endlessly. On the Waterfront, for instance.

This band is sublime in its musicality and subtlety. No drummer like Jim Keltner, to mention just one of them. An album with him on it, is always worthwhile.

May I add my amens and hosannas to the growing angelic chorus endorsing the absolute necessity of RP playing more, and more, John Lee Hooker. Listen: the man does not need our props, not anymore. Not even while he was alive did he need our props. Radio Paradise itself is a very small thing next to this man's achievements. He knew what he was about, and fans of great American music (and not just the blues) knew it as well. So--there is, indeed, an absolute standard, and here it is.

Ry Cooder, the fabulous singers who once joined his band, Jim Keltner on drums, Nick Lowe on bass and.....Johnnie Johnson on piano. That alone is enough to be called a dreamband, but above that they accompany one of the absolute masters of The Blues, the late, great John Lee Hooker. Yes, that's hip! Man, imagine what it would've been like if this band had performed live.
