To make a mountain up your life
Is just a choice
But I never learned enough
To listen to the voice that told me
Always love, Hate will get you every time
Always love, Don't wait til the finish line

Slow demands come 'round
Squeeze the air and keep the rest out
It helps to write it down
Even when you then cross it out

But Always Love, Hate will get you every time
Always Love, Even when you wanna fight

Self-directed lives
I want to know what it'd be like to
Aim so high above
Any card that you've been dealt, you...

Always Love, Hate will get you every time
Always Love, Hate will get you-

I've been held back by something
Yeah. You said to me quietly on the stairs,
I've been held back by something
Yeah. You said to me quietly on the stairs.
You said,
Hey, you good ones.
Hey, you good ones.

To make a mountain up your life
Is just a choice
But I never learned enough
To listen to the voice that told me...
Always love, hate will get you every time
Always love, hate will get you-

I've been held back by something
Yeah, You said to me quietly on the stairs,
I've been held back by something
Yeah, You said to me quietly on the stairs
You said..
Hey, you good ones
Hey, you good ones
Hey, you good ones

Old, sentimental fool... but you are right! And btw. call me old sentimental fool too :)
"To make a mountain up your life
Is just a choice"

Simple, yet profound.
We all have the ability to choose different, whether you believe it or not.
I had to bump my rating up this morning just because of the message.  Call me an old sentimental fool, but we need more love in this world today.
Sending this to Israel
Perfectly constructed and arranged song.
Very good.
When this song first started I thought it was a Gomez song I hadn't heard before.  I'll give it a 7 to start just because of that.
i swear i just heard this here yesterday. surprising with so much music on RP...but, i do love me some nada surf.
Love it. Always makes me grin when it turns up on RP. Wonderfully life affirming.
This song tends to play when I'm sitting at my desk, just hating on somebody. Gets me thinking n'shit.
A dear friend of mine introduced me to the music of Nada Surf while we were both on a semester-long placement at a slightly sorry and dilapidated university in northern France, where neither of us attended many classes owing to strikes and blocades (the French are good at those!). She hailed from the University of Wisconsin and I from Cardiff University in the UK. I highly doubt we would have crossed paths were it not for those few months out of our respective stomping grounds and comfort zones. Nada Surf have remained a cornerstone of my collection, but, alas, I've lost touch with the friend, partly owing to my intense dislike of social media, but I still think of her from time to time. She was a kind and genuine soul. Funny how music can evoke this kind of wistfulness. I hope you're doing well Carrie!
Hey, you good ones ...
Truth is spoken here.

I really like these guys. And I guess I don’t understand why people spend the energy and time to write hateful remarks. If you don’t like it just fast forward over it. Not everyone’s going to enjoy your witty rejoinders about how bad a song *you* think this is. I’m guessing the only musical talents the haters might have would be to do hand clapping.

This has got the sound of that sunny carefree rock from 1999-2000 (before 9/11 came along and everything started sounding like System Of A Down).

Sounds like a good PhD project - review rock n'roll songs for lyric combos that just don't sound right.

Not sure what you're suggesting / supporting here TP?

This is one result of hate / love in todays society, thats certainly caught my attention over the last days.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-35904406

Listening to the words of this song today, had me thinking about this a bit.

On the one hand, by all accounts I've read - this man was very highly thought of, because of the non judgemental 'love' he offered to all people he came across in his daily life.

On the other hand the man who murdered him, hated him (or more likely what he stood for) enough to drive 200 miles and lie in wait, before ending his life prematurely.

The society I live in (mostly) values the first behaviour and (mostly) abhors the second.

The perpetrator will certainly be sentenced to life in prison and if he shows no remorse whilst there, will spend the rest of his days locked up.

If this is the 'force one at the expense of the other' you refer to, then I definitely support this 'forcing one at the expense of the other.'
Difficult to achieve with ISIS bombing at will = no reason, with no regard for innocence of the victims.

Newer Nada Surf didn't do it as much for me, but this song hooked me back then and it still holds up.  I like it when Bill pulls out songs that used to be regulars on the playlist.  Hey you good ones.

Deja vu! Nice theme.

Thank you Bill, for promoting peace through music. I think it's so important to take advantage of every opportunity in our daily lives to work for peace.

A very wise man once said…
"I charge you all that each one of you concentrate all the thoughts of your heart on love and unity. When a thought of war comes, oppose it by a stronger thought of peace. A thought of hatred must be destroyed by a more powerful thought of love. Thoughts of war bring destruction to all harmony, well-being, restfulness and content. Thoughts of love are constructive of brotherhood, peace, friendship, and happiness."

Nice little peace & love segment -- but this song sucks.

Could it be any LESS original?  Perhaps any more watered down?

It's like Wonder Bread.  I like a good multi-grain whole wheat...  with some flax seeds, maybe...

For me it was the shins, but after listening to a bunch of their cuts and seeing some shows, these guys have inexplicably become one of my favorite bands of this era. They just seem to have a nice balance of many common elements - none of which are entirely original - but taken as a whole make for one terrific rock band.

They weren't the first groups I discovered via RP (can't remember that far back) but they are one of them and the rest of your comment holds true for me as well. This is a 10 in my book!

Yea, I gotta disagree here. Your assessment of Snow Patrol is correct, but Nada Surf is not bland.{#No}
Oh what the Hell; 7 -> 8.
"Always love.  Hate will get you every time."  I can't believe I never listened to these guys before.  What a simple, true message.  And the music is good, too.  Maybe it's the "Nada" in their band name that always turned me off before.  But if that was the case, then the "Surf" part should have brought me back.

I have found balance. I like this song, and this band. And the message in this song. {#Sunny}
As I'm sitting here feeling like a chump again for donating my life for the man's wallet the positive message of this song is helpful.  Thanks Nada Surf, thanks Bill.

Just hearing this set for the first time and I love it!  Took me until Neil Young to realize there was a theme.  Loved Nada Surf....unique vocalist there.  Keep it coming RP!
Youngbloods - Get Together
Elvis Costello - Peace, Love and Understanding
Neil Young - Throw Your Hatred Down
Nada Surf - Always Love
Michael Franti & Spearhead - Pray for Grace

Yay, the peace and love set!  Such a beautiful, unifying theme, yet a set that contains at least one song that someone hates.
