Buenos Dias! It is 4am & my coffee is just starting to kick in! ...gunna be a great day! 
The Musical produced by Atlantic Theater in NYC this year was fantastic! I'm reasonably certain it will transfer to Broadway soon. Seeing the music performed live was worth the ticket alone, but it's so much more. I work in the theatre industry and this is a must see. It closes at the end of January '24 and is totally sold out. but keep your eyes open for the transfer.

I was lucky enough to see them when most of the original members were still around, at the Paramount in Austin. What a show - they made it look so easy.
Loved the movie/documentary as well, especially the guys walking around NYC and seeing many of the places they had played back in the day.

I spent 13 high seasons (Dec to Apr) in the Dominican Republic at a hotel I ran and BVSC was high on my play list for our restaurant overlooking the ocean. I learned to appreciate Caribbean music and truly found that I appreciated Cuban BVSC more that local DR bachatta or merangue. Solid 8 for me.

So you wander along to the Casa de la Trova in any Cuban town, and you'll find pretty much the same scene all over, a bunch of cool dudes playing all varieties of musical instruments, belting out this tune to a packed room, some of the audience nursing mojitos or Cuba Libres, others dancing like they were made for it, bodies suddenly touching, swinging, swaying, arms locked and twirling in impossible shapes. Every time the song changes in an imperceptible way, every time different, every time good, more sax, less guitar, more percussion, all possible combinations. You come away feeling like you never want to hear the tune again, so many versions have you heard; Havana, Remedios, Santiago, Barracoa, Trinidad, Viñales, and then the rest.
And then this comes on RP, and it all comes flooding back, and you realise that you were wrong; it is an astonishing song, place and country.

So you wander along to the Casa de la Trova in any Cuban town, and you'll find pretty much the same scene all over, a bunch of cool dudes playing all varieties of musical instruments, belting out this tune to a packed room, some of the audience nursing mojitos or Cuba Libres, others dancing like they were made for it, bodies suddenly touching, swinging, swaying, arms locked and twirling in impossible shapes. Every time the song changes in an imperceptible way, every time different, every time good, more sax, less guitar, more percussion, all possible combinations. You come away feeling like you never want to hear the tune again, so many versions have you heard; Havana, Remedios, Santiago, Barracoa, Trinidad, Viñales, and then the rest.
And then this comes on RP, and it all comes flooding back, and you realise that you were wrong; it is an astonishing song, place and country.

Yo siempre estoy al loro con lo de "Se volvió loco Barberito, hay que ingresarlo!" Makes me smile each time I hear it. 
This came out appropriately for when I lived in South Florida. It was played in all the Cuban restaurants around. What great memories!
The making of the album was VERY interesting....love this music!

This whole album is excellente! Always takes me back to 2001 having dinner with friends at the "Havana Club" (2nd floor balcony) in Puerto Vallarta. Nice background music to enjoy Mojitos & Paella with friends while watching the sun set over the Pacific....

I visited Havana in late January-early February of 2004. One of the things that I loved most about that city was that there was music like this everywhere. Walking through the streets of Old Havana was just an awesome experience. I stopped to watch a flamenco dancer in the lobby of the Hotel Valencia. She was the most seductive woman I have ever seen. My father used to call me a "communist" for listening to Cuban jazz from Radio Havana on shortwave. 
He did kind of like my Ry Cooder records, though..he was a big Chet Atkins fan, and knew good guitar work when he heard it. I wish he'd lived long enough to see the BVSC project. It might have changed his mind.

It's worth owning, as mood-provoking as it is. We enjoy pulling it out every now and then and rewatching it. The DVD gives one a whole 'nother notion of what Cuba is all about, IMHO. Now... if they could only do something about those Castro guys....
