For a long time I felt without style or grace
Wearing shoes with no socks in cold weather
I knew my heart was in the right place
I knew I'd be able to do these things.

And as we watch him digging his own grave
It is important to know that was where he's at
He can't afford to stop...That is what he believe
He'll keep on digging for a thousand years.

I'm walking a line
I'm thinking about empty motion
I'm walking a line
Just barely enough to be living
Get outta the way
No time to begin
This isn't the time
So nothing was done
Not talking about
Not many at all
I'm turning around
No trouble at all
You notice there's nothing around you, around you
I'm walking a line
Divide and dissolve.

Never get to say much, never get to talk
Tell us a little bit, but not too much
Right about then, is where she give up
She has closed her eyes, she has give up hope

I'm walking a line
I hate to be dreaming in motion
I'm walking a line
Just barely enough to be living
Get outta the way
No time to begin
This isn't the time
So nothing was done
Not talking about
Not many at all
I'm turning around
No trouble at all
I'm keeping my fingers behind me, 'hind me
I'm walking a line
Divide and dissolve.

I turn myself around, I'm moving backwards and forwards
I'm moving twice as much as I was before
I'll keep on digging to the center of the Earth
I'll be down in there moving the in the room...

I'm walking a line
Visiting houses in motion
I'm walking a line
Just barely enough to be living
Get outta the way
No time to begin
This isn't the time
So nothing was done
Not talking about
Not many at all
I'm turning around
No trouble at all
Two different houses surround you, 'round you
I'm walking a line
Divide and dissolve.

As the album title says, the name of this band is Talking Heads.

not THE Talking Heads.
Love Byrnes mono-chords!

Yes, yes he did.  Here's a great video of them live (with Mr Belew) in Rome if you've not yet seen it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwWW742T0Wc

As an aside, don't know where you reside, but Jerry Harrison and Adrian Below are doing a Remain In Light tour in the US next year.  Incredibly tempted to see them.

Give this a Big Three.  Not because I don't like the song ... I've been a Talking Header from the get go. Unfortunately this LIVE version is missing a lot.  Bass is awol, vocals are screaming, really difficult to listen to . Guess you had to 'Be There".

...and surely their houses do not move!
Fun to hear this live version of Houses in Motion on a beautiful Friday in the fall.

The release date is wrong--this was a double LP that came out in '82. Kinda weird that the band released another live album ("Stop Making Sense") two years later.

And it still is great!
Music has moved out in so many directions you can't possible like all of them.  At first they were ODD but I soon began to like their quirky sound and behavior which was a major Byrne style and still is.  he's off to other creative endeavors .
This is one of those groups that, initially, just didn't get.  However, over time, repetition has made their stuff grow more pleasant and interesting to my ear.

This is why I value Radio Paradise. There's still stuff played here that I detest, but since the vast majority is stuff I like, I try to be patient with music that doesn't sound like "music" trusting Bill's taste / expertise. Some never wins me over but there's also a hell of a lot of stuff played here that's new to my ear and is "love at first hearing". I like that it doesn't get me into a rut of always falling into my own musical comfort zone, while not over-exposing me to the "bubble-gum du jour".
I read a lot of totally opposite comments here, half (very) positive and half (very) negative. Only that fact makes Talking heads a successful band.  As a musician and a music listener & breather I have lots of different genres on my shelf from classic music, over 70's rock to old style jazz and new experimental music. I think that music can (and should) be free to introduce more art forms in performing part. Talking heads was an excellent (and whatever "other" half say-very listenable)  project at the time they appeared. Look at the whole package, and just enjoy {#Bananajam}
I really hate this untalented music imitation. 1.
sounds lousy, I hate it
I subscribe to the Duke Ellington position.  "If it sounds good, it is good."

The Talking Heads were a great rock band in their day, regardless of the label you wished to put on them.

Byrne continued on with an interesting a creative musical career.

It's fun hearing them live.  Thanks for playing them.
No apologies, I really like David Byrne and the Talking Heads.  This guy was so ahead of his time.
I don't understand the hate directed at Talking Heads. Even if you don't like Byrne's voice, the song's still got a good beat and you can dance to it (as Dick Clark might say).
 Typesbad wrote:

You can hear them all cranking away, and they seem in conflict with him saying, "look - I'm singing an important song here."

Thank you for your thoroughly one sided opinion but in truth they did make great music. I don't listen to them anymore that often. I did see them twice in concert in my younger days. Great dancing music, great partying music. But like a lot of bands, they did get kinda weird towards the end. But they are artists in the purest sense and should not be dismissed.

Interesting that someone should "tire" of negative comments regarding music, which is so subjective. People's negative comments have absolutely no bearing on whether or not YOU like it. That's what this place (forum) is all about. Many's the time when folks don't like something I do. Does it matter? N O P E !!!

By the way...Not a fan of DB or the Heads. Ugh.

The Talking Heads were an American rock band that formed in the early 1970s and was based out of New York City. Their sound combined punk rock, pop, funk rock, art rock, and later in their career, world music. In David Byrne, they had one of the most distinctive front men of the period; they were extremely popular while they were originally together, and continue to influence many musicians to this day.

Why I love them - I was introduced to them while in high school to a friend who suggested that I watch Stop Making Sense. My favorites include Cross-eyed and Painless and the album The Name of this Band is Talking Heads (album art pictured).

I mean, we hear at least one TH/DB every day. Why? They aren't THAT great, especially when compared to <fill in the blank>. What other artist do you hear EVERY day here, other than tracks from those "new" CDs with which Bill is infatuated at the moment (i.e., Elbow, My Morning Jacket, Fleet Foxes, Madrugada, Jenny Lewis, et al.)

I love this. However, if something starts playing that I don't like, I turn the volume down.
Someone please get this off, I feel sick!!!!
Time for our Daily Dose of David. Blech
who else is tired of the heads and their repetitive style! Why does D. Byrne think he has to sing every song? Will someone tell him his voice SUCKS ! Yuck! How 'bout we start up a separate Radio TH-Byrne channel. ThePoose wrote:

If you "collect" guitarists like I do other Porcupine Tree guest guitarists include Mike Akerfeld (of Opeth) on the second solo in "Arriving Somewhere... But Not Here" on the album Deadwing and Robert Fripp on the song "Way Out Of Here" on their new album Fear of a Blank Planet. Alex Lifeson of Rush plays the solo that comes about halfway through their 17 minute opus "Anesthetize" from FoaBP too. Steven Wilson is quite a fine guitarist as well but he is something of a genius to invite these other gifted guitarists to contribute to Porcupine Tree's recent albums.
Man that solo does sound like Adrian Belew. I know he played with them during the Remain in Light era. If you love Adrian's style check out Porcupine Tree's Deadwing album. Adrian Belew plays guest lead guitar on the songs Halo and Deadwing. Classic Belew He has also opened up for Porcupine Tree on occasion- what a treat
i love this album.
