I'm not defending it, but in this case it's only peripherally about guns. It's Newsom playing his cards across state lines to deliver some unintended consequences to the pro-lifers who thought they were so smart. Maybe the thought is that Texas will go "oh shit!" and drop their law. Your last comment illustrates how that will work out.
The other possibility is that they say, "See, everyone is doing it, must be ok." Overall, I think the republicans are happy to let the country devolve as long as they can control the sparsely populated states.

"well being an asshole seems to be effective for those guys, let's roll out a platform of assholery of our own" is not a great response. How about "You're clearly being an asshole, let's close up the loopholes that let you be an asshole and get a bunch of people to routinely vote assholes out of office".
One approach hopefully reduces assholery, no guarantee, but it's a hope. The other approach not only guarantees assholery, it encourages the assholes to dig in ('see you did it too' ) and to go looking for a way to be a bigger asshole next time around.

Yes, and it raises the stakes. We have to win at any cost because look what they'll do to you if we don't.

It's political hostage taking.

============
In a only sort-of related turn, our Wyo legislature has passed a law saying it's illegal for a local cop to arrest someone in violation of a federal gun law. I don't think that was a problem but anyway, it's the same sort of law that's behind "sanctuary cities," which our same legislators would be howling about except now they have CRT to worry about.
