‘Take the Ship’: Conservatives Aim to Commandeer Southern Baptists
The insurgents, some adopting a pirate motif, believe that the denomination has drifted too far to the left on issues of race, gender and the strict authority of the Bible.
In the wake of the racial justice protests and the ongoing disinformation about the election, there has been “a sifting” going on in the church over race and justice in particular, he said.

“The annual meeting is an opportunity for denominational leaders either to sensitively address the concerns and racism that Black people have experienced or to side with the status quo which favors white people, particularly men,” he said.

The denomination has about 14.5 million members but has been steadily shrinking for the past decade. In 2014, about 85 percent of Southern Baptists were white, 6 percent were Black and 3 percent were Latino, according to the Pew Research Center.

Southern Baptists split from their northern counterparts in 1845 in support of slavery. After the denomination repudiated its role in slavery in the 1990s, a portion of its national leaders have attempted to diversify its churches and seminaries. At its 2019 meeting, the convention affirmed that critical race theory could be an “analytical tool” useful to faithful Christians, a move that many conservatives describe as alarming. Its current president, J.D. Greear, urged Southern Baptists last summer to declare that “Black lives matter.” (...)

Conservatives have spent months drumming up turnout. The Conservative Baptist Network, an increasingly influential group founded last year, released a recent video urging Baptists to “stop the drift” by coming to Nashville. Some Baptists planned to gather at rallying sites before the big event. Outside Dallas, 1,600 pastors registered for Wokeness and the Gospel, a conference that warned of the perils of what organizers call “the new moralism.”

Family Research Council Launches ‘Center for Biblical Worldview’

The Family Research Council, a major religious-right political advocacy group with deep ties to Republican leaders and an aggressive culture-war agenda, announced Wednesday the launch of the Center for Biblical Worldview, a new “ministry” that it says will “train Bible-believing Christians to advance and defend the faith in the workplace, in the schools, in their communities, and in the public square.”

“We want to help you see the spiritual war behind the political war,” says a promotional video for the new project, which a narrator says is designed to help Christians “think biblically about everything.”

Two longtime religious-right activists were announced as the CBW’s first senior fellows: pollster George Barna and theologian Owen Strachan.

Barna specializes in studying what he calls SAGE Cons—Spiritually Active Governance Engaged Conservative Christians. At FRC’s 2017 Values Voter Summit, Barna told religious-right activists that 2016 was “a Christians vs. non-Christians election,” concluding, “God did a miracle for us.”

Strachan, now a seminary professor, is a former president of the Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood, a group that says it was “established primarily to help the church defend against the accommodation of secular feminism” and promotes traditional “gospel-driven gender roles.” Historian John Fea’s blog post on the FRC announcement linked to a recent Strachan tweet telling Christians to find a new church if their current one allows women to preach even occasionally, and another telling Christian women that God will reward them for doing laundry, changing diapers, and supporting their husband.

Christian Nationalists Eager To Impose Cancel Culture On Biden’s Prayer Proclamation
The fact is, the Trump-worshipping strain of right-wing Christianity was going to find some reason to moan about Biden’s proclamation no matter what it said. Still smarting from the fact that Biden beat their new messiah in November, they’re hard at work at a tiresome game: using religion to divide Americans and further the culture wars.

So, let’s call their bluff with a modest proposal: How about we ditch the National Day of Prayer entirely?

Biden’s NDP proclamation was less offensive and less exclusionary than those Trump issued – Trump typically implied ALL Americans pray and his proclamations tended to be studded with offensive “Christian nation” mythology. But even though Biden was careful not to paint all Americans with a prayerful, Christian nationalist brush, those who don’t pray or don’t have any particular religious tradition are bound to feel excluded when the president of our secular nation issues calls to prayer.

Those of us who advocate for separation of church and state won’t miss the NDP because we argue that government, as a secular entity, has no business meddling in the religious lives of its citizens, including offering advice on when, where, how or if they pray. At the same time, Christian nationalists won’t have to worry about their tender sensibilities being offended because the president fails to employ the religious terminology they prefer. Both sides will be happy.

I call that a win-win.

Religiosity Largely Unaffected by Events of 2020 in U.S
The coronavirus pandemic has had less effect on Americans' personal religiosity than on their belief that religion has a greater influence on American life. U.S. adults' views of the importance of religion in their lives and their religious identification were unchanged in 2020, while their attendance at religious services and membership in a church, synagogue or mosque declined slightly.

Yet, there has been an uptick in the percentage of Americans who think religion as a whole is increasing, rather than losing, its influence on American life, a pattern seen at other times of national crisis.

Ammon Bundy's Ongoing Religious War
Ammon Bundy, right-wing malcontent behind the 2016 armed takeover of Oregon’s Malheur Wildlife Refuge and now a western anti-mask movement, believes he’s doing God’s work.

Coming from a long line of religiously inspired men who have been “called” to defend the US Constitution, Bundy has varied in his focus, from rebelling against public land ranching regulations to protesting COVID-19 safety protocols. But in his view, these are all forms of government tyranny and affronts to constitutional rights. Arrested for the fourth time on March 15, 2021, Bundy was taken into custody for failing to appear at his hearing on past trespassing charges. Because he refused to wear a mask into the courtroom, thereby missing his trial, he was apprehended outside amid of a throng of other protesters.

Bundy’s crusade has been a long time in the making, but in the last year he successfully established a coalition of supporters that is broad, diverse, and a serious threat to federal law. His group is called the People’s Rights Network. Like the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys, it includes members who see the current government as a threat to perceived rights and are committed to defend their ideas of personal liberty, by force if necessary.

So what has taken Ammon Bundy, who first came to prominence during the 2014 armed standoff in Nevada over his father’s unpaid grazing fees and trespassing cattle, into a life of an anti-government militant? The answer is a libertarian worldview and his take on Mormonism. Bundy’s ideology parallels the thinking of certain leaders in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who’ve had a history of government cynicism. He also shares with them a tradition of theo-constitutionalism—venerating the Constitution as a sacred document. The paradox here is that Bundy believes he is upholding the Constitution and fulfilling his religious duties in his acts of lawlessness. (...)
