Inserting a video

All you need to do is grab the "embed code" for a video on YouTube and paste it in the post editor while in HTML mode.

Where is the embed code?

Under a YouTube video, click the Share button.
Click on the first option called Embed.
A popup appears. Just click Copy (bottom right) and it will copy the needed code into the clipboard.

You now have the embed code. Paste it in the post editor while in HTML mode.

For both videos and images it's recommended to always press the Preview button in the post editor to get an idea what the post will look like, before you hit Submit.

Inserting an image

If the URL of an image somewhere on the Internet ends with an image extension (ending in .jpg or .png or .gif) you can just copy and paste the URL for that image (or drag/drop from another tab) into the editor (in WYSIWYG mode) and it will be converted to an image by the editor.

For example, https://media.giphy.com/media/Tj3XAYP3Gp3V4VMZyz/giphy.gif will become:

If it's an image that doesn't have one of the extensions above, the editor doesn't recognize it as an image, but instead guesses it's a link (Hmmm, starts with https://...).

For example, https://tinyurl.com/ya5z3mzk will be turned into:

https://tinyurl.com/ya5z3mzk

If you want to show it, you will need to use HTML (See previous post).

In the editor, in HTML mode, an image looks like this:

<img src="SomeImageURLgoesHere" >

So with the URL above (that has no extension) it becomes:

<img src="https://tinyurl.com/ya5z3mzk" >

Which will show up as:

Some basic info on the HTML IMG tag

Okay, how about videos?

The HTML button!

The first button in the post editor let's you switch between WYSIWYG and HTML code. Pressing it once, brings you to "HTML Mode" (background goes dark), pressing it again brings you back to "normal".

Yes, I've tried that - no luck.

EDIT: works for tweets, but not pictures

You're going to need the following bit of text to start (which I keep in a snippet tool in my browser):

<iframe border=0 frameborder=0 style="height:450px;width:550px"
src="https://twitframe.com/show?url=XXX"></iframe>
The XXX needs to be replaced with the URL for the tweet that you want to show. BUT that URL needs to be URL encoded (never mind what that means). I have a tool for that in my browser too, but you can also do it at:

https://www.urlencoder.org/

Copy the URL for the tweet and paste there and press the Encode button. The result appears underneath. Take that result and put in place of the XXX above.

One final step...

Tweets embed videos or sometimes a reply, so their height might vary quite a bit.

This means you need to adjust the height. Where it says 450px in the snippet.

To change it and paste the snippet into the RP post editor, you may need to switch between HTML View and Normal View (use the first button in the editor that looks like < >).

I usually make it bigger and do a Preview. Does it fit? If not, make it bigger like 750px.  Or smaller, etc. Once it looks fine, hit Submit.

The useful add-ons for Firefox are Cryptext (various ways to encode/decode stuff) and TextNotes (collect snippets).

Alternatively you can use something like https://tweetcyborg.com/ which turns tweets into images, but you need to store the resulting image somewhere like imgur.com (or your flickr, etc.) and then post that image here.

thanks!
