You can getcha some Starlink for $99 with a $500-and-it's-yours hardware package. A friend got in on the beta and he's reporting 178, which I thought was a lot. It's a lot more than the 8 or 12 he got before, but Starlink says they're shooting for 1GB.

The ISP has not changed but our VPN provider changed the engine to WireGuard so the virtual private network tunnels are much more stable and faster.

I’m supposed to have Fios 100/100 Mbps but it rarely is on the nose. This morning it’s 60/56 Mbps. And my phone/internet costs $73/month. It’s a love hate relationship. {#Yes}

You shouldn’t have to publicly humiliate AT&T to get usable internet

After spending $10,000 to complain, Aaron Epstein is going from 3Mbps to 300.

It’s been estimated that there are millions of Americans who don’t have any access to home internet at all, let alone broadband (which itself is arguably not fast enough), and they can’t all afford ads in the WSJ. Besides, that certainly seems like a trick that would only work once, especially given that it may only work for one household at a time — Ars Technica wasn’t able to get a straight answer about whether Epstein’s neighbors would be getting faster service anytime soon.

(Aaron Epstein) says he’s been an AT&T customer for 60 years (and backs it up with a @pacbell.net email address), and says he’s disappointed that the company isn’t keeping up with competitors when it comes to his area’s internet.

I'm impressed.  I would have jumped ship a long time ago.

Funny how I probably interpret this story so differently from everybody else.    My immediate reaction is this is so cool. In other countries and perhaps other periods in US history, the victim who dared complain would risk ending up in jail or worse.

As for spending $10K on the advert.....   I reckon Aaron Epstein could have managed the same result through a much less expensive path.  These modern oligopolies are quite vulnerable to determined citizens and consumers.

Spacex seems to be moving right along with Starlink  (once on the page scroll down)

looks like they're about to cover the planet in high speed connectivity

this is especially good for the remote (spaced out) among us

Re-purposed coaxial cable to the curb here.   Actually I am quite happy with 120 down and 7 up.  Much better than the (never fully) ADSL 15 down and (never fully) 1 up that was the only non-satellite option before.  Now that was painful!   Still enough to stream 320 kbps RP though.

Apparently our ISP can provide up to 250 Mbps download speeds on coaxial cable elsewhere in the interior of BC.  Not sure why that option is not available here.

Many, many factors - who else is on your segment, and what are they doing, what route is your traffic taking, who configured the router that your traffic is using, how are they prioritizing traffic.... Past performance is no guarantee of future results...

Cox rocks! My pension from the 8 years I worked with them is more than the one I would have gotten for the 19 years I worked for the system here in town. I opted for a lump sum instead.

I ask out of sheer ignorance: Does anyone need download speeds of more than 30Mbps? I gather you can stream 4K video at that rate. What more can you do with SeriousLee's relatively pokey 120Mbps?

Yes.   Download and upload speeds are positively correlated.  For serious professional purposes, higher upload speeds are helpful.  That said SL's stats are pretty decent.  We get the same download speed if I shut down the VPN tunnel.   Lee's upload speed is better than ours.   7 Mbps upload — what we have — is not bad.

I would want upload speeds  in excess of 5 Mbps and download speeds in excess of 50 Mbps.  Lower latency is nice too.  250 Mbps download would be ideal but not always available.

For gamers, the more the merrier.
