Kurt....If you're not sure, we could ask the richest man on the planet. He lost money for 20 years.

What you're getting at is the current President's attention span not being measured in likes.  The last guy couldn't plan beyond his next happy meal.

Well, I see little conflict between enlightened nationalism and shared global interests.

Is it nationalism that drives the US War on Terror, a rhetorical device used to dehumanize, demonize and kill?    I do not believe so.

Were the Sept. 11th attacks in the 'national interest'?  Or was it a good pretext to start slaughtering innocent civilians in several theatres because all Americans derive intrinsic joy from killing the innocent?

Is it really the 'national' interest of the USA to support Israeli nuclear weapons-backed ethnic-cleansing terrorism?   Especially in light of the horrifically bad health outcomes of over half the American population?    In the event of a regional nuclear war, Americans will die like folks in poor, developing countries.

Nationalism does not mean that ordinary dumb Americans have to do what anti-Semitic Americans want them to do.  If Americans agree to sacrifice the lives of their fellow citizens so Israel can annex most of the West Bank, well, is that rational 'national interest' calculation or are powerful special interests appealing to the murderous, racist, uninformed, ignorant side of Americans?

Is it in the national interests of ALL Americans to give the Baltic states NATO membership?   Why?  So US weapon system manufacturers and the heavily subsidized US agricultural sector can increase exports?  So NATO troops can strike up relations with local prostitutes?

Does the eastern part of the Ukraine really matter to Americans or are all Americans "speak white" racists?    Was imposing billions of dollars of losses on Exxon Mobil in the national interest thanks to ineffective but self-loathing economic sanctions?

Is it in the national interest to re-ignite the Cold War with Russia?  Or China for that matter?

Is it in the national interest to have 9% of the population not covered by health insurance?   Explain the national health, economic and security benefits of that situation.

Ah, the School of One Size Fits All !

Except that it doesn't.  To think that it does and to force that upon everyone is narrow minded and just plain wrong.

There is nothing wrong with "national interest".  That already implies a collective interest above and beyond narrow, special interests.   The Greens and Political Ecologists have a slogan — Think Globally, Act Locally — all of this works together.

Incidentally, Lazy8, you asked a while back for a reference, and then I lost sight of that thread.   I guess my foreign policy politics is closest to those of the 'realists', i.e., the use of rational cost-benefit analysis in the realm of international relations and strategic studies.

A favourite read is Stephan M. Walt at Harvard who publishes often in Foreign Policy.   My strategic studies prof at Universite Laval — Albert Legault — was also a realist, or if you prefer identified with the school of 'realism'.

I suspect he is just reclaiming the language after years of republicans saying you can't be a democrat and a patriot

What Bidenism Owes to Trumpism

The Biden agenda tries to seize the populist opportunity that Trump let slip away.

....
So just as Trumpism depended on deficit spending to avoid any conflict with his party’s donors and anti-tax activists, Bidenism depends on deficit spending to avoid having to soak his professional-class constituents. That such spending is possible, that inflation is just a rumor, is the crucial precondition for both men’s styles of populism.

But whether Biden can simply expand upon his predecessor’s agenda without putting his own coalition to the test — well, that depends on just how long we stay in an era of money for nothing, and populism for free.
