I would like to ask a question of you RP listeners.  I am in this debate with my 21 yr old son regarding his quest to join a band and ultimately perform live gigs.  I keep reminding him that stage presence is a real thing.  He needs to dress for the part just as if he were dressing for any job interview when he goes to open mic nights and auditions.  He argues with me saying that he can dress as he wants and its all about the music.  If a band doesn't hire him solely based on his talent then he doesn't want to be a part of that band.  Don't get me wrong, I love his sense of values and I do somewhat agree with him BUT.....am I wrong to suggest that he should fit in with the band aesthetically?  Yes it is about the music but not ALL about the music.  Unfortunately it matters, doesn't it?  We are talking about paid gigs.

He wants to perform music live! Fantastic. The odds of being in a band that pays the bills are slim, and being obstinate about "art" can make them insurmountable. If his everyday style is appropriate, then maybe, but that flannel shirt should look vintage but be freshly laundered. Up close, he should look like a Hollywood movie's depiction of him: Hair messy? Fine, just clean and perfectly messy. If he really doesn't have a look or style, then I'm sorry, but he has to play the part (dress for success) or be a studio musician. You can't be a slob there, but at least you don't have to put on airs. The hard thing to remember is that when you take the stage, you're an entertainer. If you look like you don't give a shit or even know what you're doing, people won't open their ears to hear what you're about. Why should they take you seriously when you don't? Oh, right. It's all about the music. Hope you like coffeehouses and tip jars, son.

If that seems harsh, sorry. My number one advice is to be nice. Friendly and helpful (not obsequious, just be approachable). If people wish you were dating their daughter, they'll help you out. If you insist on playing the surly iconoclast, you'll do everything yourself, on your dime.

It seems like "attire" would ultimately matter on what type of music the band plays, but for an audition it shouldn't be as important.  I would think just looking relatively "neat" and showered should be okay, because it is not really the same as an office-type job interview: musicians are hired largely for their musical abilities, with the exceptions of things like boy bands or pop bands meant purely for visual markets.  Obviously, if a band hires someone, they may offer suggestions or specifics on how the new member should dress for gigs.  An open mic night is different, because it's more than an audition, it's a public performance, so I believe that appearance is more important for that.  Auditions usually occur in practice or recording studios, in front a just a few people, so getting "dressed up" may not be as important - though it couldn't hurt.  If he's auditioning for a band that plays a sort of music he's into, then he may already be dressing the part.  I guess looking "cool" is always going to be what matters.

I can't do it, so move along
Do you really want to wait until I prove you wrong?
.
.
.
But how, how am I different?

How, how am I different?
How, how am I different?

And just one question before I pack
When you f*** it up later, do I get my money back?

I can't do it, and as for you
Can you in good conscience even ask me to?

'Cause what do you care about the great divide
As long as you come down on the winner's side?

And how, how am I different?

We've all been storing our email in the clouds if you think about it.  On the other hand, I wouldn't throw out all my files.  Clouds blow away.  Keep your files as backup and for when the interweb is down.
