Yeah, their stuff is pricey, but it's the best on the market, IMO. They have a product they developed a couple of years ago called a "digital ground" that's designed for inkjet printers. The idea is that you coat paper or fabric with this stuff, send it through your printer, and the dye-based inks will bond with the ground, making it permanent. I'm betting that would world for ballpoint pens, too, though I've never tried it myself.

I still do a great deal of pen and ink drawing, usually with India inks and/or more light-fast mediums, and I usually protect my work with a UV-resistant coating. Yes, art works in museums are rarely displayed anywhere near windows - some rooms in the MMA in NYC are almost entirely dark, with special lighting aimed at the pieces - usually drawings.

There are grounds that you can apply to a substrate to make dye-based inks more permanent, and there are products you can finish with that will also help. Ultimately, every medium has its drawbacks in terms of archivability; the keys are using the proper grounds and varnishes, and lessening their exposure to both UV and air. (Have you ever noticed that fine arts museums rarely have a lot of windows? The National Museum of Fine Arts, in DC, has no windows that can shine or reflect UV onto the works!)
