Very nice, Dave. You definitely have a landmark home. Great view, too! Enjoy, cheers!
I'll post some better pics later. The house is scheduled to be painted in Feb. The house used to be part of a large dairy farm for centuries until they sold off most the land around it and the other homes were built much later. The next oldest house around it is from 1964.

Welcome back Dave!! we missed you.
We are probably retiring within a year. can we move into your barn?
The barn would make a very nice little house. I was going to make it a man cave. I am putting in a 2 bedroom flat in the cellar though ... I missed you guys also!

Is there any room left?
There is plenty of room left. If you are into the beauty of nature and love to hike and explore it's wonderful. If you are into city night life then it's probably not for you. About 70% of the people here speak English but I am trying to learn Portuguese because I want to. I was originally looking at Pico island (the one with the big mountain) because it is more untouched by humans. It's almost as big as Sao Miguel but has only 15k people. It's easier and cheaper to find a house with land on the ocean and rents are cheaper also. I decided against it due to my age and vision loss and even though they have clinics and docs there I didn't want to be that far from a hospital. They do have ferries and puddle jumper planes that regularly go between the islands.
The last eruption there was in 1957 and it added a couple of square miles to one of the islands. Nobody died and everyone was relocated with some going to the Boston area. About half went back later.
It's also a great area for whale and dolphin watching. It has been habited since the 1400's and the village I am in is the oldest of them all there. Even has a nice beach area.
Many people also live there part time and buy a house and airBnB it when not there,
People move there from all over creation. Not uncommon to meet people from several countries while at a resturant or shopping.
One warning - So many people are moving there now that they don't want to end up like Madeira with 2 mil plus people on less land mass. So they are restricting the number of rentable beds and it's hard to get a Bob license or open a new hotel now. They are also thinking of stopping the NHR 10 year 10% tax scheme for new comers at some point to try and slow down immigration.

Fortunalely for me the most active volcano is safely on the other side of the island group. My house is maybe 300 years old and has no earthquake damage/ Its no worse and maybe not as bad as the Hawaiian islands which were formed the same way. Furnas, the next big town west of here is a tourist trap due to the beautiful (but smelly) hot springs.
Due to the climate and soil pretty much everything grows like crazy like 3 foot long zucchinis. I have 9 orange trees and 8 banana trees and a few others including some great wine making grape vines.

i'm guessing gardening there would be very productive (noticed the terraces everywhere)
and healthy seafood should be abundant as well
probably do well during the zombie apocalypse too

I don't understand this theory, I mean it's clear that Zombies can't swim, but it's not like they won't just wander the bottom of the ocean until they stroll up on the beach.
Yeah. Look out for the one they call "ol' lead foot"...
