I had those, still do, but it's not a mystery anymore: Dramatic temperature changes cause rafters to expand or contract and that's just a big pop as the wood moves along a nail or another board. It's not a bad thing but sometimes plaster can crack when it happens. It's just a really loud creak.

We were sitting here in a quiet house, and there was a rather loud crashing sound from the back of the house.  The cats were both on the bed, we were both in the living room.  We have no idea what it was.  Dragon thinks it was a big chunk of ice melting and falling off of the roof, but there is no ice on the ground. There is nothing out of place, nothing amiss in the back or side yard.  SO yeah, weird sound.
