It's odd that for many years many Canadian whiskies were generally called "rye whiskies", even if they were made with little or no rye grain at all. Many of them (like that one) are made with a lot of rye. The US (only) has a 51% rule for rye whiskey; I've had the Jim Beam Rye a few times - I thought it was quite good.

I've shifted to rye for the house standard. My absolute favourite (the Alberta Dark Batch Rye, which I've recommended here before) is no longer available. Not certain if it's just not being exported to the US, ....

The one that made me laugh out loud when they revealed it: a $22 bottle of Canadian... nothing at all like the Canadian blends we usually get. It gets a lot of meh reviews and every one of them I think pre-judged it or didn't even try it because it was the one I thought was Woodford Reserve. Lots of vanilla, sweet spice, smooth with some good grain and oak and did I say it was $22? What a deal. A great anytime winter sipper.
One of my fave. For a couple dollars more, their Copper Pot is even better imo.
A local store got new owners and they're doing some fun stuff. Friday, they had a blind whiskey tasting. 4 bottles, starting with a light-colored thing and proceeding to dark rum color.
First up, tasted thin and smoky, was the most expensive. I had it pegged as one of the regional wheat whiskies, which are often good but a few months ago I tasted one that was like a BF Goodrich. This was a Japanese Nikka. I did not care for it straight but maybe with some water and time I could come around.
skipping the middle two, altho #3 was a bourbon and was most peoples' favorite; I thought it was boring and not at all worth the $35, but less expensive than a lot of boutique bourbon.

If you're a Scotch drinker, hit your local outlet before the tariffs kick in. Or switch to Irish...
Yeah, 25%. It's okay, according to the President, exporters pay tariffs, not importers and ultimately - domestic consumers. Maybe he'll make a deal to get China to pay those tariffs - or Mexico! Not sure if they'll pay the tariffs on Parmigiano Reggiano, Romano, provolone, and Emmentaler cheeses though... Single-Malt Irish whiskies are on the list as well.
Saw the same thing here at the Liquor store this morning. It's on special, $2 off. Which brings it down to $30. Not bad a price for a tasty 45% whiskey.
Got 2 bottles. I suspect it might go down even lower in the next sale (5 weeks from now, or so). I suspect there'll be some left.
Well, as I suspected It's now $6 off. And they have over 60 bottles in stock!!!

Prices can be ambiguous signals. In this case, I would suspect that a 'discontinued' notice will encourage many to stay away as it 'signals' poor quality or at least poor consumer acceptance. In this case, lower prices might be interpreted as lower quality or simply less desirable.
The actual reasons for Alberta Distilleries discontinuing Dark Horse might have nothing to to with quality or consumer acceptance but many in the public will fail to recognize that. All these producers of differentiated goods adopt price discrimination strategies. If not careful, one whiskey product can eat into the margins/return of another product.
The caveat: Dark Horse developed a cult-like following among a small number of users who lap up as many clearance bottles as possible. Tastes are beyond dispute.
Sad news for the fans. Me? I never got a chance to try it. It took a while but Alberta Distillers got back to me after my email inquiry.
Plan on stocking up Lee?
