A Blockbuster Vermeer Exhibition Worth A Trip To Amsterdam

A once-in-a-lifetime treat that’s well worth the trip.

“There will never be another Vermeer show as great as this one,” exclaims the Washington Post, calling it “an international act of veneration,” and “the show of a lifetime,” for Vermeer admirers.

“It’s Now or Never: The Rijksmuseum’s Hotly Anticipated Blockbuster Vermeer Show Is Finally Here—and It’s Unmissable,” Artnet enthuses.

“This is an exhibition to die for – or even in, like the character in Proust who expires in front of Vermeer’s ‘View of Delft,’” writes The Guardian. “Proust was once so excited to see a Vermeer show that he collapsed. So take it easy if you get to see this gathering of practically all his masterpieces....This is more than an exhibition. It’s a miracle.”

Actually that's the reason for the trip. Not that I'm a huge Vermeer fan but my cousin contacted me saying they were going and had booked a place with room for others. Then one thing let to another and I'm headed around the world. That is if I survive the plane trips.

I'll send you a postcard

There are photos of me wandering around Switzerland in lederhosen but in my defence I was 7 years old.

I want to travel by train so Greta Thurnberg doesn't hunt me down me for taking those cheap carbon-spewing flights.

Very much a first world problem. Where should I go with a spare week in Europe? Not really enough time to do anything too in depth. I'll be in Amsterdam before that and fly out of Frankfort.

I would like a helper monkey. Yes please. I believe that will solve many problems.
Although it might create some new ones...
Didn't the old lady swallow the helper monkey just before she swallowed the dog?

I like the way you think.

We have Big Green Egg, it's great but has its own drawbacks. Also a garage-sale nat gas Jenn-Air - once I replaced the burners it's working well.

Just had a milestone birthday.
My lovely wife got me the ultimate grill.
This thing is awesome. Beautiful stainless steel.
It uses wood pellets. It smokes. It bakes. It barbecues. It has a section that gets up to 900 degrees for searing steaks.
It connects to my phone, so it will tell me when the grilled items have reached the optimal temperature.
The problem is this - my old propane grill was 20+ years old, so it just sat out there on the deck, getting rained on.  Who cares - right?
Now with this new one - I am compelled to cover it and wheel it under the overhang to keep it protected from the elements.
This must occur AFTER the grill has cooled down, the food has been consumed and I am now on my 4th beer.
I have to go out there, unfold the cover and carefully place it over the grill, working it back and forth to make sure all the corners are covered and the cover has no wrinkles, etc.
Brutal.
