The jobs were moved offshore, which is what GE seems to be doing with the majority of its businesses.
GE.Not all of it. It would be impossible for them to go offshore. They just got too big too fast. They will blow out sooner or later. ALL offshore.

Also heard a report (not sure of the source, might have been abc news) that overseas manufacturing jobs are making a comeback to america because chinese labor costs are going up.
Jeffrey Immelt, CEO of GE and Obama's Jobs Czar, said that on 60 minutes Sunday. Companies are getting tired of trying to deal with the Chinese.

Edit: and there are American light bulb manufacturers. Don't know why they aren't in stores, and they might be 400% more expensive, but there's no reason they can't be made here.

Made in America: A Blueprint for Creating JobsIn Bozeman, Mont., Anders Lewendal is hard at work building a home he hopes will be a blueprint for creating jobs in America. Everything from the nails, screws and bolts, to the steel, staples and bathtub is made in the United States. "Every piece here is made in America," he said. Lewendal is convinced that if every builder bought just 5 percent more U.S.-made materials, they would create 220,000 jobs. The Boston Consulting Group agrees, confirming that Lewendal's numbers add up. click on the link for the rest of the article. They have been doing regular programming about this.

I absolutely agree about the 'buy quality' mantra. Don't prop up shoddily-made goods, no matter where they're made. Since I've started repairing hair salon gear, I've become pretty disgusted (ok, MORE disgusted) with what passes for a 'quality' item. And not all are made in China. Worse, a good portion of the 'quality' has been designed OUT of the product: even if it was produced perfectly, the design itself is lousy. Plastic parts that are super-flimsy: adding $.05 worth of plastic would have prevented a $150 hair dryer from being trash after it was dropped once. Wire connections that put stress on the solder joints. Tiny little power cords that short out after regular use: spend another $.10 per unit and upgrade to more durable wires: you'll be making 199% profit instead of 200%, and you'll have a lot fewer returns. Most people think the 'quality' comes in on the manufacturing side, but the fact is most of the quality, and most of the cost, is designed into the product: no amount of manufacturing magic can make a poorly-designed product better.

Don;t exactly know how to use this thread, but maybe we can share examples of American made products.
