How does PSD/skip work exactly?

How does PSD/skip work exactly? What is it switching TO? Is there a parallel stream with alternate songs? How long does PSD stay active, and when does it switch back to the genuine livestream? I've been wondering this for years.
PSD has been mostly phased out. This would play a song then return to the live stream when the song ended, so you wouldn't usually return at the start of a song. Skip works like a standard playlist, it just goes to the next song, leaving you ahead of the live stream.
